Digital Dash help

86 z31 NA...when i bought the car instruments were not working, the seller told me they did work but right now they were not. Sure enough as I drove it they started working perfectly fine. It always has functioned properly as far as the speed and tach measurements but the display is not. Sometimes it will work and seem half lit and certain parts of the digits will be poorly lit appearing glitchy and the entire thing kinda flashes like a strobe from dimness to more bright. Sometimes it will work fine except for the trip meter, and sometimes it works 100% I don't really know what triggers how it functions it seems to do it randomly. I noticed there is a nearly rhythmical ticking noise coming from inside the dash, I don't know if this is related at all but it does it even when the dash is functioning properly.

Any suggestions or insight? I know nothing about z31's except that i think im falling in love..thanks!

the most common issue wht the digital dash is due to the power supply unnit, located under the bash to the right of the settering column
