I've been having a very difficult time gauging the engine oil level from the dipstick. I haven't had to worry too much about this since I've already had two oil changes done (switched to semi-synthetic at 3000, full synthetic at 7500), but now it's been about two months and 2000 miles since my last oil change, and I want to make sure I'm not running low.

On my previous car, there would be a streak of oil on the dipstick, and this streak would end at a bubble which would sit between H and L, indicating the level was good. When the bubble would sit at L, i'd put a quart or two in. However, every time I've gone to check the oil on this car, I don't notice a significant and clear bubble cut-off, and there seems to be a streak of oil a bit past the H marker. I don't think the engine is over-filled since the oil change was done at a Nissan service department.

Has anyone else experienced this? Am I simply being retarded and missing something? Please help me out with some advice so I don't end up over/under filling the damn engine.

Another question: about how quickly does a newer car burn through (synthetic) oil? I was told about a quart per 1000 miles from my service department, but I'm not sure how accurate that actually is.

Um I change mine every 5000 miles and use full synthetic, I don't see any significan't oil burn. at 25K now

and I never have an issue, the oil is pretty clean at 5K but it's easy to read on the dip stick, definite cut off of oil to stick...

I use whatever brand of synth is on special, so I have used Castrol and Mobile 1 so far.

I had this same issue just this weekend. I pulled the dip stick out after the car turned off for 15 mins or so and after 5, 6, 7 attempts i was like WTF is going on here. It would show oil along the stick except for the area you are suppose to know if you are low or high........there was a gap on the L and H area with no oil on it. I pulled out the owners manual to make sure I wasn't insane to see if there was a different way of checking it. I've changed 8 or more different car's oil and never had this problem before.

After a few more pulls and wiped off the stick each time, I finally got an accurate reading. But seriously, it was around 10-15 pulls and wipes to get that reading.

And I'm not sure about how many quarts are burned up per xxxx miles.

I've also had trouble getting a good reading in the past. It was so bad once that I thought there was no oil in the car. A few more tries and it seemed I was successful.

The VQ35 is known for oil burning issues to its quite possible that we are just going through some oil faster than normal.

My coupe only has 5500 miles on it but so far has not burned any oil. I am running synthetic. My 07 sedan has 44,000 on it and still has not shown any burn on full synthetic (switched at 7500 miles). Even though I have the 2.5's I don't think you should be showing any decrease in oil level from burn whether it is synthetic or not.As far as not seeing it on the dip stick, you need to let it sit longer before checking it. I check mine in the morning before I start it up. I find it much easier to see the level and you'll get a more accurate read.

I heard that if you start using Royal Purple that you can't use any other kind of synthetic (Brand)? I thought it was stupid and not true, but just out of curiosity is it true or not? I use Mobil 1 15W50
