Is it possible to make my American Versa have day time running lights like the Canadians have?

Thanks for any help with this.

Yup, you just have to get an aftermarket kit.http://www.daytime-running-lights.com/

It might lower your insurance a couple of bucks too if you let them know you have it.

Does anyone have any experience with this product they could share?

How difficult is the installation for a DIY project? Do you have to cut into wires or locate specific wires using a multimeter or something like that?

Any feedback on the quality of the components or how the company's customer service is if someone had questions concerning installation?

Thanks.

My opinion is that day time running lights is just a waste of battery life but saves lives. Most people drive without lights on anyway. Even simply using a left or right turn signal in making turns or switching lanes!

Being a commercial truck/bus driver we are required to run our light at all times so I just run fogs and headlights at all times.

DRL's shouldn't affect battery life. The battery does nothing when the car is running. The alternator provides the electrical power when the car is running.

Whay spend the time & money wiring up a kit & just turn on your head lights & turn them off when your done? Easy! Even my little Russian car does that. With the ignition on & if you pull that hand brake, the head lights turn off. The tail/marker lights stay on & within the head light there are little low-watt bulbs that come on, "park lamps" I guess. They shut off all with the ignition switch...

i agree. DTRL's are teh worthless. i especially HATE when people use them as an excuse NOT to turn on their headlights if it's raining. In MD its a law, if the wipers are on, lights MUST be on. and yet i see SO many people without them on, or people with just DTRL's on. sure you can see them coming towards you, but the people behind them cant see them. because DTRL do not turn on tail lights.

My old '92 Crown Vic I sold some time ago had the same, but the little resistor that lowers the voltage (for DTRL) to the head lights burnt out a long time ago.

Hey your a Z car guy?

My boss @ work has a modified 280 Z...

I had several: two 1980 280 ZX (1 was the tan/black 10th Anniversary, 1 was black) & 1971 240 Z, w/ the twin 32/36 down-draft conversion, as the triple side-drafts were too pricey @ the time. And a '71 510.I had a couple 1977 German Capri Ghias 2.8L V6 as well, great cars too!All gone now.

I WANT A 1973 610 COUPE !!! One of the great Datsuns of the 70s, wonder how the 810 got its styling from? My 1st car was a 610 wagon of the same vintage.

wow, thats quite the collection you had there. a 10th anni. 280? wow. yeah, i've got an 84 300ZX N/A. is your boss on the 300ZX Club forums? they have a sub section for S30's too...

sorry for the OT post.

i've never had a car with DTRL's. i hate them. but i do like the thing Toyota has with the automatic switch...you can just leave the selector on "Auto" and when you turn the car on, lights come one. turn the car off...and, you guessed it. lights go off.

Yeah. my 1st (the 10th Anni) was written off by an a-hole running a red light. The 2nd Z had a few mods: High lift cam, Weber throttle body, BAE manifold (never did get a header), 2.5" exhaust, a glass-pack resonator with a SuperTrapp muffler (make sure it sticks out far enough!). GAB struts, Arizona Z Car sway bars & bushhings with lower springs, alum-slot wheels w/ 225-60s. Front Airdam & Arizona Z rear whale tail. Rear louvers on all 3 rear windows. And headlight covers as well. Hey, this was around 1990! Waaay before all this new stuff. When I sold the car, the guy didn't want the SuperTrapp. I eventually sold it to some (no racism intended) Asian guy (I guessed it would be one buying it before placing the ad!).Cheers.

DRL's run at about 50% power of your regular lights. That's the difference. Also saves on bulb life.

yeah man, i agree... especially with todays crappy weather, i was going down 24 (2 lane highway) and someone came up behind me with no headlights on, and its amazing how much you dont notice them, especially oncoming traffic. but you think state troopers will complain if i use fog lights instead of headlights?

in most states it's illegal to supplement head light use with fog lights. and even then, your tails still aren't lit so its unsafe. that is one of the biggest pet-pev's(sp) i have is bad drivers. and people that don't use head lights when they're supposed to.

We'd like to have DRLs but the way lights cloud the lenses so quickly these days we'd rather they didn't use the headlight lenses (better a totally seperate light like foglamps).

Our biggest problem with the Versa as far as lights go is their lousy idea to always have the instrument panel lights on. It's very easy to get into the Versa in a brightly lit area at night and not realize that the headlights aren't on because the panel is lit up. In our case it's compounded by the complacency our Buick has given us for over five years with it's automatic headlights that come on when it's dark enough, just in case you do forget to turn them on.

I agree with you completely on this point. My wife has a Malibu and it's got auto lighting too, so it's very easy to forget turning lights on at night. This is partly compounded by the fact that we have a Cdn-spec car with DRL.

I suppose there are two solutions to this problem: 1. Defeat the instrument lighting when headlights are off, or 2. Have all lights on at full strength at all times.

Are any of these easy fixes?

Still forget to turn the headlights on some nights because of that (the more things that are automatically done for you in one vehicle the more you forget to do it in another).
