one thing to note about having a 710 is that the 710 and 610 are not similar at all. They only look similar.

Supposedly they are two completely diffrent cars. Body parts won't match up, etc..

Funny that this thread came up, there's a 710 up for sale by me, it's been listed for like $800 or $500 for some time now.

Anyone know specs on it? FWD or RWD? engine? etc? It's one of the few models that my catalog o' import doom doesn't list.

it's an L series powered rwd car...predecessor to the 610....which is the 510's baby....

they're kind've ugly...but I dig 'em...not the boxy sex that is the 510, but still neat.

OK, my import book o' doom had a footnote on 'em.

Yes, they are L series RWD's. They are lighter than the 610, but usually used the same engine.

the '77 that's available around here is an L20B, most likely. It's a 4-door, and it's moss green.

$500. Tempting... very tempting... but the V would be booted out of the garage, and the wife would likely murder me in a bloody, bloody mess. Which is why the other thing going through my brain is to wait for a decent S130 turbo.

Edit: the guy also has a '68 520 pickup that needs a carb that looks to be in decent physical conditon for $500 also, but I'm not really a pickup guy.

Edit 2: Got a response from the guy with regard to the 710. It's apparently an L20B 5-speed manual. Supposedly runs, drives, and stops. Had an oil leak but it went away when he "tightened the valve cover bolts". And it needs exhaust work, which he couldn't elaborate on.

I'm busy with work the next couple days, but I think I'm going to go check it out on Saturday. Rust is one thing I've learned to look for after so many old Subarus.

If there's only surface rust, I'll probably bite. I know how hard it is to find anything that old without rusty rockers, etc.. and we don't even salt our roads.

I know that 510 owners often pirate LSD's off of mid-80's Subaru 4WD wagons... wonder if the 710 could take the same.

Well, I went and looked at it. Only a couple places where there's a little rust under the paint (surface rust). No holes that I could see, rockers were solid as could be.

It fired up and ran, but was really cold blooded, backfired a lot, and had barely enough power to make it around the block. By the amount the engine was shaking in the bay, it's a safe bet that there's also a broken motor mount. Interior wasn't in good shape, driver's seat back was broken. About the best part of the interior was that the seatbelts were still working. Also, didn't have a street-legal exhaust...

I dunno... if someone was looking for a solid 710 body to start with, it's good for that... but mechanically, it would need to start almost from step 1.

Oh, and he apparently can't count gears. It was a 4-speed, not a 5-speed.

As far as I know, yes. that's the one I test drove on Saturday.

Solid body... needs some interior work (but not too bad, all things considered). It runs, drives, and stops. Not a street legal exhaust (cherry bomb with a pipe that terminates in front of the rear wheels), and probably a broken motor mount and a seriously out of tune carb.

But it is by far not a lost cause. Just a bit beyond my scope at this time.

Hi. I have both a Datsun 710 ( 74 ) and a Datsun 610 ( 74 ). The front suspension is the same on both cars , in fact the 510, 610 and 710 are identical in the front suspension issue.

The rear if the US sold 710's is leaf sprung. ( Overseas the Datsun 160J was a IRS suspension 710, never sold in US.)

The rear of the 610 ( IRS ) and the 510 (IRS ) is very similar.

All three cars have the L series engine ( In Mexico, the 710 was sold with the "A" series push rod engine as an option. ) The 610 and the 710 were sold both with the L18 and L20B. The 710 is not the decendant of the 610, nor the 610 a predecesor of the 710. Both were sold at the same time, and the 1974 car book quotes the 710 as more expensive, seen as a more sporty car than the 610.

I love both cars. I like the 510, but my attraction for the 710 and 610 resides in the fact that the later ones are rare. There are many 510s, but if you have a hot rodded 710 or 610...you are in a category by yourself!

Good luck.

I have NOS struts on my 710 get the job done. There are few datsun ebay stores and some leaf spring shackles that lower the car by extending from the body. The KA swap is the same as the 510. just my 2 pennies.

Aftermarket suspension for the rear of a 710 consists of performance shocks ( Koni, Suspension Techniques,KYB, Bilstein....etc) and decambered leaf springs.

Decambering the leaf springs means to take away the curvature in them. Spring shops do the job, plenty of spring shops around. All big rigs use leaf springs.

Adding a sway bar will give it Corvette esque cornering capability. For the front, all 510 parts work. The only difference is the sway bar bushing brackets. Coil over suspension from Ground Control works fine. You can also swap in Datsun 280ZX strut assemblies. If on Budget, cutting the front springs will lower the ride. Add good struts like Koni or adjustable KYBs and you are set. Sway bar a must to maximize suspension performance.

ADDCO has sway bars ( I bought a kit for my 710, and recently a kit for my 610.)
