Datsun 510 swap

V8 240sx? Sure! If either the chassis OR the engine is non-Nissan (i.e. SR20 in an RX-7 or LS1 in a 240sx), we've done it.

I've got a friend that has a 4 door 72 datsun 510 im thinking about picking up next year. The last car I did ran an 11.8 in the 1/4. Id like to crush that number.

I've been pricing a few routes. I've only very briefly looked over a 510 to know what i'm up against. I only searched quick whats been put in them.

Obviously I know ill have to tub the rear. Never done that yet so that will be interesting.

Id be curious if anyone knows how much the chassis will take to that kind of a goal. Obviously the complete factory drivetrain will be canned. What do you guys think I should put in her. My initial thought was LS with no accessory's so I wouldn't have to re graft the firewall simply move the engine further fwd of what i've seen others do. So alternator off the driveshaft. A remote mounted electric water pump(ill need help here?) Retain the OE manual rack.

This thing is only gonna go straight. I'm aware it will turn into a VMAX if I put that engine in it. Id prefer not to hack the car to complete bits.

Trying to open up the rear wheelwells on a 4-dr 510 is nigh impossible without major restructuring (including the doors). There's not much room for tires under there unless you flare (and cut fenders). I have 205/45/15s and they're 3mm from touching (inboard and at the fender lip).

An LS should tuck into the bay nicely without all that weirdness with the alternator and water pump. I'm actually working on a swap into my 510 (top secret, but think v8).

Flip the front crossmember and re-weld (to accommodate oil pan). The biggest issue will be drivetrain - the 510 was IRS, and had u-joint axles. Those won't take much more power. Basically, you're gonna need to convert to a straight axle (domestic) rear end, or swap in some billet CV axles (my route). R200 LSD will handle the power (find a WRX STI in a junkyard)...

510 doesn't have a steering rack, it has a box with Pitman arm (and will have to go).

Rats...

Well I guess ill be researching how hard it might be to fit more rubber under it.

Most images i've seen of LS swaps completely destroy the firewall and tunnel.
I also just thought it be kinda cool sitting there with no belt.

Did not see that coming on the steering either. Does it help with exhaust clearance on that side by chance. I know the steering shaft is always a problem on everything else.

R200's come in 240sx 280z's also believe. (a just "wrx" rear end will not hold up) I guy brought a LS swapped wrx in for .....a new rear end. I popped the hood like :wtf2:

Ill just weld a R200 and run bias ply tires again. The sidewalls flex so you don't get the chip and chatter. It actually worked out great although tire life is insanely bad.

The R200 LSD you're gonna want was in a 87-89 Z turbo. Altho, for what one costs, you could do a Ford 9" rear axle.

WRX diff will hold LS power in a car that won't hook up (which defines an LS-swapped 510 perfectly, lol).

Ill have to get eyes on one to see if I cant cut in some wider tires. Id guess rear seats will be out which is fine. Ill leave that pending what kind of condition the car is in. If I find rust ill just hack the back of the car off boom room for rollers.
