Great writeup. I finally broke down and bought oil (my jx35 requires NS-3) over ebay (dealership wants $20/quart, ebay was around $12). The hardest part was that stupid filler cap off. Hate that thing. I broke it enough so I never have to put a screwdriver in to pull it.

Since mine drained 4 quarts but holds 10, I'll change it once per year instead of the dealership-recommended 60k.

For the initial change 60K is okay for most people, depending on driving habits. It's way too long for subsequent changes. The reason is exactly what you said, you're only exchanging half the fluid or less. My recommendation is 30~35K if you're a normal driver, 20~25K if you're a leadfoot or routinely climb steep hills, 40~45K if you drive like grandpa.

I just turned mine 180 degrees, hence never locks. Never had a problem after 5 drain and fills. Taking that tranmission dip stick is a pain in the a$$. I can either take it out in 5 seconds or 5 minutes. So I said the heck with that, and left it unlocked. :naughty:
