Anyone here notice a rattle/whine coming from their CVTs? I have a 08 3.5SE Sedan.

I noticed it with about 2000 miles into the engine. Only noticeable with the windows down, coasting at 10-15mph with the engine idle. Doesn't seem to depend on engine RPM, only speed.

A lot of people on the Murano and Rogue forums have had similar problems, and quite a few of them have ended up having their transmissions replaced.

Guess I'm not going to turbo this thing - I kind of need a transmission!

I haven't heard the rattle myself, nor have many with the 3.5 engine...it was more prominent in the 2.5's, like in the Rogue....

Odd though - I would take it to the dealer, because something is not right.

Update - I took the car to the dealer and they confirmed the noise. Nissan has agreed to replace the CVT on my car.

Everyone with a CVT should listen for this problem - it's pretty faint (can only hear while cruising at low speed with the driver side window down and AC/Radio off), but it could be an early indicator of transmission failure.

Hopefully the new transmission will fix the problem!

Update - CVT was replaced and the rattle is gone. My car was manufactured in Oct07 and I bought it new in Apr09.

Update 2 - The CVT rattle is back. Nissan is refusing to replace the transmission. I'm going to start a poll to see if anyone else is having the problem.

OK this is weird.

The only noise I hear is this faint high pitch whine, when I am slowing down or coasting around 25mph and below. There is no rattle, just whine, so I'm wondering what this rattle is you are describing.

My car's 2 months old, 5200 miles. V6 CVT as well.

Yeah I have that whine too - the dealer said that it's normal. The rattle is a different noise (although the whine at freeway speed preceded transmission failure for a guy on altimas.net - I think his username was ssjones)
