You will need to mount it somewhere between the exhaust ports and the turbine. Usually at or near the collector on the manifold or on the turbine inlet. You don't need to route the WG back to the downpipe , but if you don't, it will be quite loud and if you don't, you will want to run a pipe somewhere behind any open windows. Otherwise you'll get a nice wiff of exhaust at least everytime you stop the car.

If you are looking to put together or have put together a custom kit, I suggest you buy yourself a copy of Maximum Boost by Corky Bell. Unless you will be working with a shop that knows what they are doing. Even then, I'd want to be knowledgable enough to know if the shop actually knows what they are doing or not.

My buddy's shop deals with show stuff and one of his customers brought in a Turbo CR-V. It had a equal length stainless steel manifold that looked absolutely beautiful. Great job welding it together, but no reliefs cut in the flange. Also didn't use a flex joint in the downpipe. Last I heard, it cracked miserably. And just to add to it all, I was surprised at the location of the turbo. It was so close to the transmission that a filter could not even be attached. Actually very little would fit in front if it at all. I'd hate to see what happens when it gets a nice little rock flying up in there. It looked great and at least fit in the engine compartment. And the guy had no idea about the mechanics of a turbo system. It was pretty sad. Even if it was a Honda. :)

ok im starting to understand. im getting a custom made manifold. it has no wastegate flange on it. i dont think my turbo has any place to for a wastegate either. it has a small hole beside the exhaust exit flange and thats it. i think that is for an internal wastegate am i correct? so would i have to somehow weld a flange onto the manifold right before the flange for the turbo? or should i put it somewhere else? also were can i get a copy of maximum boost??

I cant tell if your turbo has an internal wastegate. If it does, then you're OK. You should be able to use that custom manifold. If it doesnt, youre gonna need a manifold with a flange for the external wastegate. (Or an adapter that goes between the turbine and the manifold, but that adds clearance issues)

I dont think you can add a port for an external wastegaste to your manifold. But I guess if you a have welder, anything's possible!

Before you buy Maximum Boost, check your public library. If they dont have it, check out Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Borders, etc

mine looks like neither, it has the round hole for the exhaust like the 2nd pic but off to the side there is a small hole (1/2-3/4 in). im pretty sure it is external though, i think that hole is if you want an internal. i think i just have to seal the small hole up.

so for the external wastegate, should i put it on the manifold where all the tubes come together right before the flange? ill have to weld a flange on since my manifold is custom and it has no wastegate flange.
