Ok, a couple different things could be happening here, so I'll just run through everything and hopefully it applies to you
First off, yes, the iPod is an MP3 player in that it can play MP3 files. It also plays a format called AAC, which is technically a better format than MP3 is, but not as widely supported. I don't think the Rogue supports AAC, but I haven't checked.
If you ripped those songs from a CD yourself using iTunes, the default format that it rips into is AAC, not MP3. You can change this using the iTunes preferences. It's in the advanced tab under the importing section I believe. I don't have iTunes in front of me.
If you're trying to burn songs you bought from the iTunes store that weren't iTunes Plus songs, then you're out of luck. Most songs purchased from the iTunes store are protected by DRM, preventing you from playing them on unauthorized players, so you can't just burn them to a CD and have the rogue play them back. These songs have a .m4p extension. Unprotected songs have an m4a extension. There are ways of unprotecting a m4p file so you can do stuff with it, but you'll have to find that out from somebody else.
If you've got a bunch of m4a files, you can get a converter that will flip them over to mp3, although you'll lose some sound quality in process due to the nature of the conversion. Some people notice, some people don't. Just do a google search for "aac to mp3 conversion" and you should get a bunch of results.
