My 97 J30 now has 103,000 trouble free miles. I am considering putting another 100,000 on it. I have always maintained it to a tee. But it is now time to put some $ into it. What can I expect it to pay to have a dealer R/R timing belts, water pump, hidden hoses, thermostat & other recommended maintenance?

Also, is it practical to invest this kind of money in a 100,000 Mi.car. What have been your experiences. What do you advise? Thanks, Much

We did a prebuy on a 1993 LS400, the current owner trying to sell the car [151k] had spent $5300 in the previous 18 months and wanted $7900 for the car. We said buy it because of the amount previously invested.

The next 100,000 miles on the J30 shouldn't cost >10 cents per mile in maintenance and repairs [$10,000] if you have truely maintained it to high standards previously.

Trade in is $5500 fair private is $6500...............what kind of replacement can you get for $15,000/6= $2500 per year [depreciation plus maintenance and repairs] assuming you are driving 15k per year [past history].

Even if you have to spend $3,000 in one year.

Q45, Thanks for the cost of operation break down. I will probably keep the car. What can I expect to pay for timing belt replacement and other recommended 100,000 Mi. maintenance. Thanks, Danny

Nice thing about the J30 [and I30] [and G20] is that they are engines which Nissan used in other vehicles. So technicans [at independent 300zx shops] are familiar [in varying degrees].

The timing belt/water pump/idlers on a GS/LS/SC400 is $1200 at our shop and $1500 at the dealers............your J30 will cost half that or less.

You paid at least $6,000 per year previously [payments/depreciation/ maintenance] why would anyone object to halving the the annual cost................other than the extra time required

It will be hard to tell the condition of some parts

Checking out some 300Z sites, some dealers sell kits that include the belt and idlers and tension arms. The waterpump is a must at your milage

Another thing to check is the cam shaft seals. At your mialge it may be worth replacing. If they leak they leak on the belt and deteriorate it.

you should be able to get all of this done for 6 to 800. Look around for a local that is familiar with the engine (as Q45 said many cars used this engine) and see if they will install your parts. You can save by getting parts from infinitipartsusa.com but your warranty with the installer will be void as they usually only warranty their own supplied parts

Thanks for the info. guys. I was quoted by the local dealer, $925.00 for timing belts, v belts, idler and water pump. Sounded reasonable. What do you think?

For a dealer that's a decent price.
