Car: Shopping for a Z

Post

Hi guys! I've been looking at 350Z's for some time and I found one that I like and am considering buying. I've been lurking on this site and found a lot of useful info but, now it's crunch time and I'd like some advice.First, let me introduce myself. I'm 69 years old and have always loved Z cars. I had just bought a new '72 510 wagon and had an opportunity to buy a new '72 240Z from my dealer at that same time (that was when they had 6 month waiting lists for the new Z's) but I couldn't afford it. That new yellow 240Z (auto.) stickered at something over $4100 which was well over the $3100 510 I bought. It was the first automatic my dealer in Baltimore received and he didn't have anyone on his list for the auto. and he offered it to me.Back in the mid-nineties I bought a used '85 Z (stick) from a friend and put about 30K on it with no problems. I really enjoyed that car. I made up my mind I'd have another Z someday. Now, I've found a real clean '04 350Z Touring coupe with 54K on the odometer. The dealer is asking $15,900. It is an automatic which I need because a nerve problem in my foot from diabetes. It is white and appears to be totally stock except for 19" chrome DriftR wheels with Toyo tires and tint. Overall the car is in excellent shape with no sign of repaint, body damage or abuse.I drove the car and it runs great. I couldn't detect any problems or concerns but I'm no mechanic (but I do have 53 of driving experience). I'm 6'-2", 225 lbs and have no seating or space issues. The ride was firm but no rattles or noises and it really handled nice. Everything works. My biggest concern at this point is reliabilty and maintenance issues/problems and repair costs. Any comments or suggestions? Any help would be appreciated before I blow my Social Security payments. Thanks.

Don

Well, I guess I can give you input about the engine the VQ series has been on Ward's 10 best engines for the last 13 years. And part of the reason is reliability of 250,000 miles.

You should follow the maintenance plan supplied with the owner's manual, it's based on mileage. Keep a record of when you replaced that part, so that way you can keep track when to replace it again. This is assuming you wish to keep it for a long while.

Just like any other car, if you take care of it.. it will last.

Hi Don,

I’m new here too so I’ll let the experts answer your questions. But, the price seems pretty good. Private party sale for that car is around $16,400 and the Dealer price runs around $17,700. I’m sure if you shop around for a while you can find one cheaper through private party but it might not be as cherry as the one you’ve found. Welcome and let us know what you decide.

Thanks guys. I'm going to the dealer tomorrow and hope to take the Z out for a little longer test drive before I make my decision. I'll keep ya posted.

I didn't know that, so i looked it up. Interesting actually. The Ward's top 10 motors list started in 1994 with a list of the top ten of the 20th century to up to 1994, then in 95 the VQ made the list and has been on it ever since. Also, another thing to consider is the G35 sedan (which houses the same motor) has taken the cake for its class every year since it debuted in 2002.... Nissan is just amazing. I'm looking forward to the 370Z debut!!!

BTW, definitely get the 2004 for $15900. I doubt you find a better deal anywhere... You won't regret it, ever.
