It looks like a Code 53 (O2 Sensor - RH) would have been easier to address, and maybe I'll just replace both sensors while I'm at it.

Figure I'll hit 'em first with penetrating oil. Any other suggestions/hints regarding DIY and where to go for replacement parts? Thanks!

Invest in a O2 sensor socket about 10 bucks, I got new sensors at sparkplug.com. They have them with the connector and without a connector for about $10 less.

I have denso first time fit O2 sensors on both sides. No problem what so ever. My MPG went up by about 1~2 after replacement.

Thank you for the very prompt and helpful hints. After I pulled codes, disconnected, cleaned and reconnected the connector, the CEL started taking a break about 120 miles ago, but I'll still be ordering two new O2 sensors later this week.

OK, it's fixed now, I hope, and there was a curious pattern. Twice driving the car roughly 110 miles north and to the coast caused triggered an O2 sensor related CEL late in the trip. Twice parking the car overnight and then while driving it back home, the CEL would go OFF early in the trip and stay OFF.

Today I replaced both O2 sensors, starting with the problem one and what looked like the more difficult of the two, the driver's side. Not too bad.

The passenger's side was a different story. The O2 sensor socket (22mm) was too long to fit on it. There were some really sharp, flesh slicing metal edges nearby (now blood drenched and filed away/smooth), the larger diameter threaded reducer bushing came out with the O2 sensor and the threads on the old O2 sensor were galled, making it almost impossible to remove (patience and penetrating oil to the rescue). Fortunately the reducer bushing inner threads cleaned up OK with a X-Acto knife and I was also able to use the old driver's side O2 sensor to chase the threads (using anti-seize).

I even took a couple of side-by-side photos of the old and new sensors, which I'll try to post later.

Oh, I noticed a bit of coolant in a passenger's side location that makes we wonder about a head gasket leak.
