Hey everyone!

I have a 2005 G35 6mt about 77,000 miles on it. Took it to AAMCO to see if the clutch had some life in it since I am going to Pensucola and driving about 500 miles every other weekend. They priced me at $2511 for a Luk Clutch, a OEM flywheel( $1211!!! dont know much about clutches, but the mechanic was talking about a dual mass clutch so I have to replace the flywheel since they can't modify the old flywheel ) installation, plus a 1 year 12,000 mile warranty.

I searched and I see a bunch of people getting aftermarket flywheels from either ACT, Exedy or Z1. I asked the mechanic that and he was saying it wasnt a good idea and he has seen them come back a year later with clutch issues and they wear alot quicker.

Is $2511 a good deal? the flywheel itself is $1211, installation is about $500, and the clutch is about $600.

Thanks for the help!

That sounds really steep. I was going to guess at $1,000. Take your car to an independent shop that has Nissan experience for a second estimate.

Is your clutch slipping? If not, there is no reason to replace it. Clutches don't wear out like, for example, tires or brakes. A clutch only wears when it slips as you start out and when you change gears. Unless you are really clumsy or do stupid stuff like power shifting, your clutch should last almost indefinitely.

Buy a ACT street lite flywheel and exedy OEM clutch. $625 for the setup and have someone do the labor for you and save 1k.

The issue is the OEM flywheel is dual-mass and cannot be resurfaced. However, Infiniti uses that type of flywheel for a reason...to help stop gear lash noise in the transmission. If you replace it with a lightweight one, you will have a noisy car! (sounds like a cement truck...). So if you decide to go aftermarket, then I recommend you go with a heavy one vs. a light one. (I think OEM is 20+ lbs, so aftermarket ones 15+ should be good).

I speak from experience...I replaced my 05 G35 6MT with aftermarket and while it was a beast off the line, the noise was really bad.

I have a light weight flywheel in my car and that is why I recommend the Streetlite because it stil weight 16.9 lbs vs oem of 25lbs. My car doesn't sound like a cement trunk. The streetlite is also can be resurfaced later on down the road if another clutch replacement was necessary.

Did you get a price from an Infiniti dealer?
I no longer allow/trust anyone but the dealer to touch my G
I'm still on my original clutch.
I got 200k on my old 88 Mazda 929 5 speed before the clutch was replaced.
I had over 100k on my 92 Lexus ES300 5 speed and 246k on a 1980 VW Rabbit diesel which had its first clutch replacement around 180k miles.
Been driving stick for over 40 years.I hate driving automatics

77k miles is a short life for a clutch IMHO

Good luck

I have a 2006 G35 that is in need of a new clutch. After reading the posts about replacement clutches and flywheels, is there after market replacements that do not make the car sound like a cement truck? Has anyone had any experience with SPEC vs FORGED clutch and flywheel replacements that?

Only 77k miles and you are worried about your clutch?

I'm on my original clutch with 170k miles

How much is the dealer charging?

The difference is that Telco puts on a TON of highway miles. That is much easier on a clutch because it stays engaged much longer than city/normal driving. Every time you push down on that pedal, you wear out the clutch components.

Dealers aren't perfect either. Long ago, a Chevy dealer diagnosed a grinding noise as a failing transmission when it was actually a wheel bearing. I once had to rebuild the transmission in a BMW 2002 twice in a year. The first time is was by the local BMW dealer. The second time, which lasted, it was by the independent shop I have used ever since.

Is there a chapter of the Sports Car Club of America nearby? That's how I found my independent shop. Second choice would be the Mechanics Files at cartalk.com.
