Clutch question: Rb20/25 vs RB26

Ok, question for those who might know:

I need to replace the clutch in my R32.

Looking up clutches, the ones for the RB26 are all twice as expensive as the ones for the 20/25.

But I know for a fact that people can take a 26 and put the 20/25 transmission on it without changing the clutch...

So what the hell is different?Why won't a 20/25 clutch fit onto the 26? If the transmissions are interchangeable (the 26 transmission is what was used with a 20 motor for the R32 GT-4 model), then what's different on the flywheel/crank that they'd not be the same clutch?

The difference between the 26 ( in most cases ) and the rest is the 26 is a pull style clutch and the earlier 20/25 and push style clutches.

A 25 flywheel will bolt right on a 26 and you can use the 25 clutch. Then if using a 25 transmission you are then converted to a push style clutch.

I just may hit you up on that offer...I emailed SPEC via the website, but not gotten response yet.

But I'm still confused. I thought the push/pull was just on how the slave cylander either pushed or pulled the lever to press the throwout bearing against the pressure plate.If it's different all the way to the clutch and flywheel, how can you take an RB26 motor and mount a RB25 trans up to it without changing the clutch (which as I said, I've talked to guys who've done that and they said they didn't change the clutch).

Now, The R32 changed from push to pull mid year, but since I was able to swap an R33 trans into it (got one for $150 and was easier than pulling the gears out and rebuilding them), that would definitely mean I have a "standard" RB26 type, correct?

Late model R32 rb26 has pull clutch. most 93-94 r32, r33 and r34, these are NOT compatible with Rb20 and 25 clutches. If your r32 is a push type clutch your golden for an Rb20 and Rb25 clutch, as they are the same. I'm using an OS giken twin push made for rb20/25/26 on my 25. You'll notice they list on their site the part #'s change on late model R32's and for r33/34's for the reason I stated above.

MOST GOOD clutches for the pull transmissions like OS Giken require the pull to push conversion kit hence the higher price.

It's a 1990. And it's definitely a push-type. I know that much.

Hrm. So I might be able to save some money? I like the sound of this.

Wait, does this mean that a VG30DETT clutch would work as well? Or are they different flywheels?

You're in luck then. Feel free to use an N/A Z32 clutch as well if you are PUSH. ACT offers a whack of N/A Z32 clutches that will work great.

Dredging up this old thread, because...well, I wanted to. :P

I've now had the above clutch in my car for a solid 6 months, and lots of playing on the highways and even a couple or so short drift events.
Just gotta say, it kicks a**. NO slippage at all, even when I intentionally rev it as I shift to get a nice 4wd scratch in 2nd and even 3rd.
Clutch kicks are solid, but smooth.
Pedal play is the same: solid, but smooth. Doesn't even kill my leg the few times I got stuck in "rush hour" traffic.

Jables definitely hooked me up with a quality product here. Will be looking to them when I need a new clutch for my Driftstang in the future. (it's a dedicated drifting car, so you KNOW I'll be needing a clutch sooner rather than later)

Which SPEC clutch is that? I'm about ready to order a clutch for my rb20, either something like yours or an OEM unit and need a little more confidence booster before i go forth.
