Sounds like a trans issue. Make sure there is enough fluid in the trans.

make sure you have the correct fluid and make sure there is enough in the transmission.

2.5 quarts of 80w-90 is what you need. typically when the transmission pops out of gear it means the synchros aren't locking completely.

If the posted above information is all good, then it sounds like your detent mechanisms inside the transmission are bad or missing. Worn out detent mechanisms will cause a transmission to constantly pop out of gear.

Upon performing the clutch job, did you happen to remove any bolts on the transmission and a spring and ball-bearing came out of the hole? If so and you did not put them back in, then that is bad. Those are the detent mechanisms.....

mine pops out in second, I was told that this was because the 2nd gear syncro is gone. I have a spare 5sp transmission with unknown mileage. Is there anyway to test the trans outside of the car?

no, only by taking it to a shop in your case. it would be cheaper to just get another used transmission.

well I have a spare 5spd transmission. I have no idea how much mileage, but I know the previous owner of my 240sx told me that 2nd gear was going. He got this transmission as a backup.

So there is no way for me to bring this trans to a shop and have them verify if its good?

dam...I may just take a risk and drop the trans in front of my house. How hard can it be?

If I drain it and fill it, drop the old one and bolt the new one. Can I do it myself with no air?

Its probably the synchros, they are shot. I drove a car with a a transmission like that for a year. My hand never left the shifter, lol

Replacing the transmission isn't any worse than a clutch job, but it's a bit tricky getting the transmission in and out. Can be done in a long afternoon.
