my clutch pedal action was fine when i first had the clutch replaced (master/slave cylinder etc...) but as time progressed it gradually started engaging higher and higher up. i searched on how to adjust the clutch in the FAQ and came up with an answer...but i cannot understand what he's talking about. maybe some of you can explain it to me in car newbie terms.

"Hi Dave-

We'll quote from our Factory manual:

Adjust Clutch Pedal

1. Adjust pedal height with pedal stopper or ASCD (cruise control) cancel switch.

Pedal height from the top of the pedal pad to the floor directly behind it is 7.32 - 7.72 inches (186-196 mm)

2. Adjust pedal free play with master cylinder push rod. Then tighten lock nut.

Pedal free play = .039 - .118 inches (1-3 mm) Pedal free play means the total measured at position of pedal pad:

3. Play due to clevis pin and clevis pin hole in clutch pedal.

Make sure that the clevis pin can be rotated smoothly. If not, readjust pedal free play with master cylinder push rod.

Looking at the numbers here and if we understood you correctly, your pedal height is out of spec. We drive a Slush-O-Matic so we don't have a comparison for you.

Let us all know how things go.

If you look at your clutch pedal it's attached by a u-shaped piece of metal which has a rod comming out the end of it. There's a bolt you loosen (which was a pain in the *** to do btw) and then you just rotate the rod until you have it adjusted as you like.

Wait, what is he talking about when he says "free play"

How far should that U-shaped bracket on the clutch master cylinder push rod?

Where are those measurements being made?

What I did... and it works for me.

losen the two 12mm bolts on the firewall inside the engine compartment that hold the mastercylinder for the clutch. lay on your back and remove the cotter pin that holds the u shaped bracket shown above to the pedal. I forget what size wrench holds that shaft, but you can only get it one of two ways as it is only pressed 180* apart. Turn the u shaft until you get it right. It took me a few times until I got it where I like it. Free play schmee play... I have the clutch perfect for me... The clutch fully engages with more than 3 mm of play and goes deep enough to ensure full disengagement.

That is the easiest way that I have found.

What doesnt work for me...I loosened the set nut on the shaft and attempted to adjust the shaft as described some time ago. What I found is that the shaft is too awkward to get to with all the other shiz under there... but... Honestly, I am a pretty big guy and working my shoulders onto the floor to reach under there with my long arms.. just didnt work to manipulate the shaft correctly.

Hope this makes sense...

Yeah it's a pain in the *** to get under there. I usually end up upside down with my legs flying around outside the door while cuss words emerge from within the vehicle. However, adjusting it that way is the easiest if you can fit down there. I just recently replaced my clutch (holy **** that was hard getting the transmission to bolt back up) ,and had to readjust the clutch from where I adjusted it to buy me some time before replacement.
