Climate Control Pod numbers do not show/no heat only back lights and wipers work

I have TT 91 and the numbers don't show at all on my digital control pod, none of buttons work pertaining to ac/heat just the back light, wipers and hazards. I had even tried to replace the climate module underneath. Does anyone know if the climate control module underneath has to be the specific year for the model of car ? from what ive seen any module was good from 90-96 and I had bought this module on ebay which was in good condition. and if that is not the solution does anyone have any idea what I'm not checking for? fuses are all good.

on the pod, press and hold the auto button, keep it held down while holding down the off switch. hold both buttons for 5 seconds together. let go. press auto to switch diagnositic modes. does the screen display anything during these steps? press off button to exit diagnostic mode.

Thanks elecfus I believe I tried pressing the buttons together for the diagnostic mode a long time ago and nothing came up but I will double check and look into the harnesses when I get home I think the diagram would help a lot.
