checking ECU codes

ok, i have searched and i can't find anything so dont flame on me. i wanna know how to look for stored codes in my ECU on my 1990 240sx. i think it has something to do with lookin at some kind of light on the unit itself? also, how would i clear them?

never mind! i found it. will i only find codes stored if the check engine light is on? also, my car has no light that says check engine. theres a bulb on the right hand side of the left bank of lights. any thoughts? (its canadian)
