I got a check engine light yesterday and when I shut off the car and looked at the tail pipe there was white smoke coming out of it even with the car off...

I checked my oil and its a lil overfilled and its liquidish and dark dark brown.

I think the oil is gettin in to the cumbustion chamber and burning oil.

What do you think is the problem???

White = Coolant. If your oil is dark dark brown and kind of milky it probably means you have coolant in it. That could be a number of different things, headgasket, warped head, cracked block, destroyed timing chain cover, etc.

yea but smoking even when the car is OFF? thats a little weird... I mean, I know white = coolant, but you're not burning anything when the car is off...

the white could be steam maybe? maybe you're overheating and your temp is broken? you could be overheating because too much coolant has been burnt and there is nothing circulating round your engine? check the coolant container-- is it empty? haha... uhmm also check to see how the "smoke" smells... coolant has a sweet-ish smell to it.

EDIT: also to narrow things down, have someone start the car while you look in the radiator (cap off, obviously), and in the coolant resovior (sp?). bubbles in either place can point to a headgasket leak.

Oh yea and Ive seen the white smoke like cold in the morning and dark at nite. The both situations when I saw the white smoke it was cold.

When the engine warmed up and was operating at a normal temp, I dun think I saw the white smoke...
