Why the long face? The system the US Versas have has been rather problematic, at least in earlier Vs.

It doesn't warn you of a blowout, only of slow leaks. I'm the type of guy who regularly checks my pressure anyway, and I can tell by looking at my sidewall if my tire is low. TPMS systems are kinda pointless in my case. They'll only notify me of a leak slow enough not to blow out the tire, but fast enough to drain a tire in just a few minutes to an hour.

That's exactly my point.I don't see much use in them if they're going to act up anyways.I'm just going to get new wheels and do the routine checkups myself.

They will be factory items coming soon in Canada. In the states it has be mandated for some time now. My company's '07 F-150 has them. New as of mid Jan. The sensor seems to go off with temp swings. Especially here in Calgary when "Chinooks" can swing temps extremely in hours!Be thankful you don't have them! It's cheaper to have a little compressor in the garage & check them weekly!Or just go down to the local garage & fill 'em up!

It has only been federally mandated as of the 2008 model year in the US. TPMS systems have been available LONG before then, and the closer it came to 2008, the more cars had them fitted.

At $125.00 each, I can check the tire pressures myself, thank you.

With our winter tire needs and most probably steel rims, having TPMS is a hassle. Buying a second set is $$ but mounting tires on the original rims also costs $$$ in the long run. I'm happy without them. I use a 2.99 Crappy Tire gauge with an electric tire pump in the hatch. Total is 32.99+tax. Works much better imo.

Does the 2008 Canadian model have them? The manual makes some mention of them, the speedometer has the lamp, but on the startup idiot lamp check, the TPMS lamp does not light up.

So does my car have it or not?

Thanks!

Well, just as a side note, my TPMS light came on today (god damn I hate that light... anyone who knows my history with V#1 knows why).

this time, it was NOT a false alarm. Pulled over and found a MASSIVE broadhead screw right in the center of the tread of my left rear tire.

Since today was sunday and all the tire shops were closed, I took the V home ASAP and switched over to the Tucson. The V goes in first thing in the morning to have the screw removed and the tire patched (the leak is slow enough that I'll still have enough air in the morning to get there safely)

Yep!This morning I just removed the great performing winter tires (Walmart Korean made studdedable Nexens P196-60-R15, without the eastern Canada required studs) & put back on those stock Conti tires (P185-65-R15) which are total crap when a little snow falls. Since spring is here & no real snow on the ground in Calgary... Working on the bike too...Cheers

My wife's previous car was running on Nexens too and they're great. Just curious, where did you get rims? I'm still trying to see if my 14" rims will fit the Versa for winter use.

funny . . . lots of people complaining but I had no problems on ice or snow

Canadian Tire rims 15" (stock size/width) $45 or 50 or so each.. My winter tires are a bit wider & lower profile than stock. When I buy new summer tires they will be P205-60 or 55 (depending on cost) R15 on stock mags.

Yes, but I don't drive it to work or my wife takes the C-train whenever she can. I remember that one year here in Cowtown when it DUMPED so much on St. Paddy's day back in 96 or 97. But I had a '81 AMC 4-spd Eagle SX/4 2-door hatch. I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO SHOWED UP TO WORK. I got the day off anyhow, & I played in the snow with the car. I miss that old thing... Just wish it was the rare 5-speed.....

'86 in Sylvan. Only traffic on the streets was snowmobiles for a day.

Remember all sorts of hassles in C'town as well -- no one was going/getting anywhere so some of the kiosks in the Chinook Mall shut up shop early -- management turfed them out for breach of contract (so that they could get someone else in the spot at greater $$$, I imagine).

Wow, I know we don't get as much snow around here as you do in Calgary but I don't understand. Why would you want your winter tires to be wider and lower profile than your summer tires? Wider winter tires perform more poorly in the snow. Also....I found the stock Conti's to run excellent in the snow. I had great traction in the snow we had this winter and last winter as well. It's the wet weather that the stock tires don't do so well in.

The difference in size is marginal if anything.

That is correct, but from what I understand, P185/65R15 is a very rare size for tires and thus is not a good thing if we want more choices. P195/60R15 is a much more common size and is just 1% off (i.e. 99km/h on the 195/60 and 100km/h on the 185/65) so it is a very good alternative. I'll be shopping using this size if I need to use 15" rims. I still have to do the fit test using 14" Hyundai rims. I'll let you guys know.

Did a fit test tonight and the 14" wheels don't fit! The brake caliper won't clear.

@CARI0CA,What is the width of your winter rim?

TPMS is only on US cars. A couple people who responded here have US-spec cars.

Oh... and on the topic of snow, Calgary's got a pretty huge snow dump today. (hmm... wondering if I could actually drive home after work today)

And do you peeps up Nort only have dry snow? I always thought that when it snows it was a "wet" weather situation. I experience wet driving in the snow especially when they put salt on the roads and it melts and the road gets "wetter". The stock Conti's do in fact suck. They're too narrow( for gas mileage ) for decent handling, stability compared to a 205,215/60 tire. Your Conti's are a OEM tire that'll only give 20K of service before replacement is needed. Check out Tirerack.com for the majority of crappy reviews. Yes, narrower snow tires will bite better than a wider snow tire but then you're back to square one with the poor handling performance. I'd much rather give a little snow versus handling performance any day.

You'll never know what you've been missing until you ditch those 185's

Steel winter rims from Canuck Tire are 6J X 15Check '08 SENTRA size I am told they could be 1" wider (I found out AFTER I purchased).

I agree. Remember back in the the late 80s & early 90s when 12 inch tire sizes were on Suzuki Forsa, Chev/Pontiac Geo, Ford Festiva hatch backs (My brother had a new 87 Suzuki Forsa Turbo). TINY tires. Try finding replacements now! My little Russian KGB squad car has 13 inchers. Even that wheel size is getting hader to find DECENT performing tires. I believe 90-94 VW Passat has 14" w/ the same bolt pattern/offset.

I will look for wider/lower profile tires when the stock Contis wear out, since they are just summer tires only.

My father has since new a '05 Pontiac Wave hatch 5-spd (Suzuki Swift/ Chev Aveo) & he's just on his 3rd set of FRONT tires on that car in 50k kms! The rears hold up since new! No wheel alignment problems, etc. And this winter he bought NEXEN winters & steel rims too. He does a lot of highway driving as he lives 50km NE of Calgary.

Cheers
