I live in Cali, I've read alot of post about the SR not being able to pass smog without some sort of "hook up" or a KA motor swap but, the pulsar came with a CA motor, so if I swap in a CA18DET into my 240, will it pass smog? Are there any tricks that will make it work?

passing smog probably wouldn't be very hard at all, if you have a cat, and just put a couple vacuum leaks, the hard part in cali is the visual inspection, which, unless it looks like the pic they have under your hood, you fail, all depends on your area, some counties do it others don't

Parts of Northern CA and mountainous regions in CA are less strict with emmissions. But you'll never pass elsewhere with a ca. Even if you told them you put a Pulsar motor in it, it's older than the car, it never came turbocharged, and it was FF layout.

Mine passed emissions here in Ontario BUT I don't have to worry about visual inspection since it came with the motor (and is an import anyway so they'd have no clue what to look for).

So as for numbers it'll probably do okay, (mine was actually only 10% of the allowable limit so it did really well!).

Since the CA was offered in the states, you could try and haggle with the ref, as long as all engine and chassis emission equipment are present. If you get a hookup, you're still in the red when a cop pulls you over and knows what he sees. Take it to the ref, get it cleared and have a heap of hassles hauled off.

Look for a smog tech that will "work with you"....Just because a particular engine wasn't offered in North America, doesn't mean it should be illegal to swap it. There are alot of smog techs that will work with you, just be polite and don't ask too many questions.
