Theres someone offering to sell me a ca18de (f/r) + transmission for $500. Says its either 80k km, or 80k miles. Missing exhaust manifold, injectors, wiring, ecu. Now I guess its perfect for buying aftermarket stuff from the beginning....but as it is now, it seems like I would have to pay for labor (to install)

Stick it out, and get a ca18det, or go for this?

If those RWD DE pistons are same as FWD DE, DO NOT BOOST ON THEM

it'll be fast for about 2 weeks. :P

it's been tried..

now, get some aftermarket pistons, you're good.

He mentioned possibly getting some det pistons.

One thing I might need to mention: Im not building a monster, only daily driving (no autox, track, drag).

Im looking for the most affordable (not necessarily cheap, as I know they dont match) setup for daily driving + boost.

unless the DET pistons are "free" and in good condition I'd just as soon say spend the money to get aftermarket ones, just so you odn't have to worry about it..

granted, those pistons would then double the cost of the motor you're looking at right there

other than the piston squirters the DE block is the same. If it's free you just need a set of pistons. If you can't get them I'll get some for you from Nissan. IO think they are $40.00 a peice with wristpin and the ringset is like $120.00 or you could just get some forgies. I have often speculated that a quality set of forged pistons do not require piston oilers which will get more oil to the mains and rod bearings which is where every CA seems to fail. Tell him $300.00.

Forget that. Get the DE. Lighten everything up. In particular, the reciprocating masses, pistons, rods, crank, flywheel, and driveshaft. Then get some nice stiff valve springs, big cams, and engine management system, and BAM!!! You've got a 1.8L sportbike motor in your car! OK, so maybe I just want to see what a CA at 10Krpms sounds like...

I used RWD DE pistons... but yeah, not a good idea, even on stock boost they'll crack unless you have some way of playing with timing on the fly(stand alone ems)

but there's nothing wrong with the rest of the DE block. The turbo oil line is already drilled (It has a plug in the DE block), and the casting mark for the water lines are there, so just drill them out and tap it. I'm running a DE motor with DET pistons, and have had no problems!

that being said, my advice is to wait until you can afford a motorset (complete). Its not worth it in the long run to nickel and dime your way there. The sum of the individual parts will eventually equal the cost of going all at once, and actually might be more expensive because you have to pay shipping on each individual part! I bought everything individually, but in the long run I just wasted time, and saved very little.

Thats all I needed to here. lol thanks.

Yeah, my thing is that Im not trying to build a monster, and I definitely cant afford, let alone know how, to build it up (substantually). I was thinking about just getting a ca18det and replacing as necessary (and what I see fit), but I didnt know if this was a better way of doing it.

I guess if I wanted a hp monster this would be a perfect oppurtunity?
