1999 QX4 brake reservoir has a filter inside the filler neck and it's got "stuff" underneath it somehow.

How do you remove the filter assembly?

That strainer is removable and replaceable (Infiniti/Nissan part number 46093-64J05). I removed mine when I bought my '02 used 10yrs ago and saw that the fluid was extremely dark. I didn't want to flush all that through my brake system when I bled it so I removed the strainer and used a turkey baster to suck out as much as I could. The strainer snaps into the reservoir neck. It will pull out if you gently pry the small clips molded into the plastic strainer so they clear the points in the neck where it snaps into. If you break it in the process, the cost of a new one is $19 at a dealership. Definitely worth the risk if you have "stuff" inside the reservoir that needs to be removed before it ends up getting pumped into a brake line and clogging it.

I had the same issue, Q-tips are good for cleaning inside reservoir, before you start, thoroughly clean the outside with rubbing alcohol and paper towels. The chances are, like on mine, the cap is no longer sealing properly, and allowing dust / fine dirt into the reservoir. I replaced the cap on mine with a new factory part years ago, problem has not reoccurred.

Popped right out. Cleaned the reservoir, replaced the fluid and happy with the results.

Thanks for the info and guidance!
