New to the forum, and I hope someone can help me with this.

While returning home from a short road trip the car suddenly overheated. I got off the road as fast as I could but the temp gauge had already pegged out; when I got to the bottom of the ramp the car died and steam started pouring out of the hood. Had to have the car trucked back home and now it's sitting in the garage as a pretty decoration. The car has no coolant in it, it all came out when it overheated. The car will start (briefly) but dies out right away (I should mention it's been sitting a week now).

So now I'm wondering--did my head gasket blow? The water pump and thermostat are both new, done with a 120K timing belt kit from Z1. The car only ran for a minute after I saw the temp gauge climbing.

Thanks in advance.

Do Leak-down and you shall know.

^ that as well as check the oil to see if it is milky. If there isn't any water in the oil, then you want to find where your water leak is. It shouldn't have gone empty unless it was extremely low due to a leak, then overheated and burned the rest off.

Thanks to both of you. I checked the oil, no milky like appearance. Just to see I poured some coolant in the radiator and it all came running out underneath the water pump, so I'm thinking for some reason (like I said in my original post the water pump and thermostat were just replaced less than 2K miles ago when the timing belt was done) the water pump went bad. I'm thinking the pump started going bad/leaking on the drive and when all the coolant was gone that's when the overheat occurred. I'm hoping that's the only thing that's wrong.

So to ask another question--with the water pump going out and the car overheating what else could that have affected? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated as I'm trying to get an idea what the repair is going to entail.

If it got too hot, then it could warp the heads or crack a block in an extreme case. Only way to tell is to replace what is broken, then run a leak down test
