After almodt a year with my SL/CVT, we are going back to a Prius.Highway mileage was >35 but 90% around town @ 24 sucked. My biggest vent is the resale! I paid $16.5k less than a year ago new and now private sales are pegged around $13. The dealers are offering 10-12!!I love how smooth and quiet the Versa is but Nissan slayed me with their recent deep discounting. A USED VERSA IS GREAT DEAL

Thats what happens when you sell a new car.

so, let me get this straight, you are willing to take a financial hit on trading in your relatively new Versa, because you want a car with better fuel economy that will save you money at the pumps?

If saving money is your primary concern, swapping from new car to new car just to get better mileage is not a good strategy. That being said, I would love to do up a spreadsheet that shows the cost-benefit of doing this swap!

Ditto. Doesn't make much sense to me either. It would take years to make up the difference that you mention.

it doesn't make any sense at all to trade in the versa for prius. i sold my golf tdi diesel (45 mpg) for the versa because i am driving three miles to work. i am getting at least 27mpg 90% city driving. wait till he need to replace the battery in the prius.

I bought low for a new Versa yesterday, 13,200 for a loaded S. I lost 1,200 just pulling it into the street. Do I Care? I knew what I wanted before I bought. I dod't plan on selling it for 10 yearsGo ahead and spend 8 grand more to get your great mileage. If people were so concerned they should just ride a bike. Here in Madison, WI they are some of the most elitist people you could know. They were pretty elite to begin with. Smug is the word w/their head up their you hoo.

It seems a lot of people were taken when they bought their car, paying for a lot of add ons. I know in my case it was the easiest car purchase ever. They tried to sell extended warranty and got turned down. Amazing how people get talked into all kinds of crap they don't need.

Good luck with your Yota. My sis in law had theirs shipped back to Japan because of probs. But then it was one of the earlier ones.

Wow, people are really defensive and touchy defending their Vs!I really liked mine but feel that I just should have traded my old Prius for the new one I just bought. The Versa resale was bad because Nissan is now discounting a Versa by up to $3000 and that pushes down the used prices dramatically. I was NOT trying to justify the mpg/cost trade-offs.As far as the Prius, my first was flawless over 3 years averaging 47mpg and I expect the same now. I wish I could afford to drive a Rogue. The Versa is a great ride! and, I'm outa here....

Most everyone was on topic, not defending their V's.

That's what you seem to imply. You posted no other reason. I still don't know why you're trading in a perfectly good vehicle.

There's something else going on here other than financial logic to make the statement that you wish you could afford a Rogue. It's not the mpg or the $$$ that were behind your decision. Would you care to enlighten us?

If you bought the Versa for $16.5k and took a hit of $3k, that means you got $13.5 for it. The lowest base price on a new Prius that I see is $21.1k. Add finance charges/interest to that purchase price. If you take the Versa at 25mpg and the Prius at 47mpg over 100,000 miles, assume gas prices will rise to $4/gallon later this year, you'll save only $7,500 dollars in that 100,000 miles. Financially the move isn't justified.

If you could afford the Rogue, you say you'd drive that. Then mpg or environmental concerns aren't the answer.

I'm not defending the Versa as a great car. I'm not particularly pleased with the performance of mine but I can't financially justify getting out of mine right now.

Is there a comfort/performance/quality factor that led to your decision? Why did you do it?

That's my guess as well. The mileage/savings thing just doesn't add up. The Prius is an awesome car. I'd love to have one, but I wouldn't want to pay for the new batteries when the current ones stop holding a charge.

How bout we trade his Versa for my 2000 sunfire. He doesnt like getting 25+mpg, then he can have my Sunfire with the 3800 Series II engine crammed into it. Im lucky to get 12mpg hwy.

This would be a money loser from the get go, regardless of the desire to save gas. Yes, you may save a few gallons of gas per tankful but the difference between the trade value of the Versa and a Pious, er Prius, could be $5000-$15,000.

$5000 buys a lot of gasoline. 1666.67 gallons at $3 a gallon. That's 151 average 11 gallon fillups. That's about three straight years of gas, one fillup per week.

Who ever heard that everyday cars are a great investment? One looses as soon as you sign on the dotted line! And just to trade in to buy ANOTHER car? What happens when those batteries go KAPUT in the Prius in the years to come? I pity those who get stuck with that bill!
