I have my block flipped upsidfe down right now and I am trying to identify the grade on the rod and main bearings so I can order replacements. Where is the stamp exactly? Will I need to go to the machine shop to check clearances or can I do this my self with some kinda gauge?

Also, does someone have a pic of damaged/worn shaft so I can compare to my crank? Pics are better than words for me, so please if you can help it, dont try a lengthy worded explanation.

unless you've had to grind things down just use standard grade stuff, or at least thats what I did, and mine's fine..

the pain rail should have a series of numbers stamped on it for the mains and crank should have stampings for the rods. Thos are when it was assembled though, they are likely not valid anymore, mic everything and order the bearings to suit the current measurements.

you need 2 things, the FSM eng mech section, and 'plastigauge' the commies at kragen have it, so every parts store should

you rip off a little piece of plastigauge, stick it on the crank journal and then torque it back down to spec

then you unbolt it, and see how far the plastic mushed out, it has a little chart to compare to

i thought it was going to be a pain, but i just did it today, easy stuff .. as long as you have a decent torque wrench

plastigauge has instructions on the package if you need them, its pretty easy

id take a pic of mine for you, but i already have it all together, and my whole rotating assembly was balanced at the machine shop, so its in really good condition, not the bad condition you were looking for

btw, at a shop that charges $80/hr for labor i had my block hot-tanked, cylinders honed, rotating assembly balanced, all journals polished, everything cleaned, and all new valve seals with a pressure check for about $700

(next season when i put in a bigger turbo (bigger than a t28) the valve job and port/polishing will happen, and step up to stiffer valve springs ... and if theyre ready, one of those swank new plenums that guy in austrailia is making)

Thats wonderful for you.

I am not as well endowed with money as you are, and I am going to replace my bearings myself. Too bad you got it all together, it would be nice to see some stuff first hand before diving in. I guess I am not going to get any more help then this. Thanks for everything else anyway, Ill post bcak if any more issues come about.
