Looking to find the most economical way for someone who wants to try learning the banjo. She's 10 years old, very little experience playing around with a keyboard but loves music.

We're going to be going cross country in the car so I'm open to picking one up for her along the 10 or 40 freeways anywhere between here and Florida or Georgia but I have no idea what kind to get her (4, 5 or 6 string, small necked travel banjo or longer necked, etc.)

Decent quality but low budget is really the key; there are no guarantees she'll stay with it and I don't want to be out a bunch of money if she bails on it. If she does stay with it I want her to be able to use the same one for a while.

Any suggestions?

Ok, does the lack of response mean we have no country/western/bluegrass people here or there's no economical way to start her playing a banjo?

Get her a traditional 5 string banjo made by Rogue or some other knock off company for a few hundred or less dollars. I tried playing around with the six stringer that is just like a guitar, and it sucks. Stick with a basic banjo, more potential there. Also, stick with a standard size instrument if you at all can, it will be better for her in the long run.

Thanks. The local music shop just seems to want to sell something expensive, knowing they have a customer who really lacks the knowledge to make a really informed decision.
