Ok so I'm new to this club/site. I really need help and I hate myself for admitting it, but its the truth. My '82 Datsun 720 4x4, failed smog (I live in California), So I rebuilt the carb ,replaced the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, air filter, fuel cap and vacume lines. I took it back to the smog shop and as soon as they put it in the bay it started miss firing and the idle went from 900 rpm to 1600 rpm and stayed there. Ive checked the spark on all cylinders its good, then I checked the distributor at tdc its good, checked valve timing its good. Checked plug gaps their good, checked timing with two different lights its good, still has a damn miss  . Now for the idle, I adjusted the idle screw, then when that didn't work, I adjusted the accelerator pump spring screw and it did a little after two turns, but then nothing after those two turns. I want to adjust the air fuel mix screws but I hate the idea of having to take the back half of the carb apart, because the screws are blocked by a bunch of emission garbage! I only have a week left to resmog it, so any help would be awesome. Sorry for rambling, I just need it to pass smog!

I noticed you didn't say that you re-checked the vac lines. That is what this sounds like more than anything as far as the idle is concerned. I'm trying to think of what else it could be if you've checked through everything, though. Only other thing that would make sense is if the carb isn't back together quite right. Hopefully we can help, man!

vac lines are good. When the engine is idling, should the choke coil cover be so hot that I cant touch it? And if I take off the choke coil cover with the engine idling should the spring be arking out on the carb? Also I might have found the problem, I was spraying the vac lines with starter fluid to see if there is a leak and I accidentally sprayed the intake at the head. And don't you know the bustard started running good. After a closer look I noticed permatex oozing out of the intake gasket area, so it might have blown out the gasket there. Because all the intake bolts are tight and every time I spray the gasket area, the engine runs good. Hopefully I can get a new gasket in time and it solves the problem!

That's a good question man. Is it the stock carb? I've never actually heard of that issue before...
