My 2000 Xterra suddenly devloped a terrible engine stutter without any previous indication of a problem. It was fine one minute and cutting off the next. The RMP's just keep dropping out and sometimes when it is idle it will even cutt off. It stumbles when it is idle and when you are driving. It seems to get progressively worse as it gets to normal operating temperatures. I've already changed the fuel filter, spark plugs, plug cables, and the distributor looks like it is in good shape. Has anyone had a similar problem or have any ideas?

There could be a fuel pump issue. The pump is in the fuel tank and is accessible through a panel under the right rear passenger seat. I don't have time to look in my CD manual this morning but I should have time later tonight.

Hey Big Bird

My big yellow bird is having exactly the same problems - diagnostics came up with crankshaft position sensor, knock sensor and idle control system malfunctions. So we have changed spark plugs, changed wires, rotor and cap so far no difference. Also have changed fuel and checked it for water and used injector cleaner (living in Mexico this is necessary) . Will now attempt to change knock sensor and crankshaft sensor unless you really think it is something else???

There is a circuit test you can conduct on the Crankshaft position sensor so I suggest you start there. The knock sensor may not be at fault and it just tripped due to an engine ping that a faulty CPS could cause.

The CPS is located at the top-left side of the transmission bellhousing and they are a pain in the butt to change.

If you hav ean email that handle 10.2 MB of info I can send you the entire section on this issue. But you need a DSL or better connection to receive it.

A neat thing happened when I e-mailed the file. It got zipped from 10.2 to 8.2MB. So I sent it the email you indicated.

Good luck amigo.

Were you able to fix the problem? I have the same issue. Please advise as soon as possible. I really need to get the car going today. My e-mail address is brillante_4@ hotmail.com for the file, just in case. Thanks.
