I'm the happy owner of a Nissan Versa 2008 stick-shift 6 speeds with 98k miles and I'd like to provide some interesting information about a similar issue I encountered.
I noticed during the night my backup lights didn't turn on when I entered the reverse gear.
A couple of weeks later I got the yellow "Service Engine Soon" on my dashboard and when I was reseting the computer with my scan tool (Craftsman Scan Tool - CanOBD2) I read the P0850 code error ("The signal of the park/neutral position (PNP) switch is not changed in the process of engine starting and driving"...).
Meaning this I started my own troubleshooting with my Fluke multimeter:
- I dismounted both rear reverse bulbs which were OK
- I checked the fuse of 10A located under the hood in a black box called IPDM/ER which was OK
- I asked a car electrician to check the wires and bulb sockets which were OK
- (There is no relay for my back up lights in this model)
- Deeper in the diagnose the reverse switch (Nissan Part Number 32005-00QAE) was in a stuck position not allowing to turn on the reverse bulbs in the back.
I couldn't reach the switch and I do not have very high skills in mechanics so I went to a Nissan dealer who replaced me the switch for $220 (115 labor + 80 part + taxes).
So, if you encounter a similar issue you are warned and be prepared!
