"Auto" HVAC button always blows on the "feet" setting

Whenever I push the "auto" button to turn on my 2001 I30's HVAC system it seems to by default blow only on my feet and to get it to do anything else I have to manually set it. Is this normal behavior or is my HVAC controller acting up?

I don't have the auto button, so I'm not sure. It doesn't sound correct. The auto setting, automatically adjusts the temp? If it is a temp controller, it may be correct, since heat rises, and the thermostat is probably at chest height. But in all honesty, I am just guessing, and really don't know.

I hadn't thought about the heat rising thing. Good point. I will have to wait until it's warm enough to set it to a temperature colder than the ambient air to see if it does the same thing when it's cooling the air down.

my 02 maxima does the same thing..

my '99 does the same thing. if i remember correctly, when its hot outside and you "auto" a colder temp...it blows out from both top and bottom.
