Hey Torry, now I am in high school right now and am in 9th grade, i have been seriously thinking about being an automotive engineer sincei was 13, well, anyways, are there any classes that you would recommend me taking in high school? I will end up taking pre-cal in my junior year along with physics, then calculus. I am aso planned on taking Auto Tech 1 in my junior year and auto tech 2 in my senior, do you think i should take those courses? And besides the ones i need to complete to graduate, are there any others you would recommend? Thanks

I never took any auto-tech classes in highschool, but my brother did....and he said it wasn't worth it. It would benefit you more to stay on the college-prep schedule by taking calc, physics, etc. I would try to take AP physics and AP calc in high school if you can, that way you can skip them in college. If you can't take those in high school, try to get as close as you can. I would make sure you are atleast through pre-calc in high school.

Taking calc and physics in high school is largely a waste if you plan on going into engineering and you don't do the AP...I ended up having to take everything over again since I did pretty horrible on the AP calc test and didn't take the one for physics.

But if you take it in highschool, it's easier when you have to retake it in college. I got AP calc credit, but failed my AP physics test. However, I don't regret taking AP physics because it made college physics easier.

sh*t, i fuked up when i was in H.S. i never passed MQ6(that's like 1 class away from pre-cal, and i never took physic before. I graudated H.S. by going to morning classes and gettin extra credit by doing projects at home. So now if i do plan to go to minnesota university for the auto engineeering would i need a longer time to complete it?

yeah i think it would be best to start at the community college, you can start to knock out the core courses then tranfer to help concentrate on your major.. i for one just applied to school today! ill be signing up next week for classes in auto tech specialing in highperformance engines and engine machining stuff

You don't need an SAT score to get into MSU. You just need ACT's.

As for screwing up high school, as long as you have a HS degree, you can do it in 5 years no problem. 4 if you are crazy like I was and take a gazillion credits per semester. I was simply saying that AP classes can help get you ahead. I mean, you can take algebra and pre-calc in college, but that just adds to the # of classes you need to graduate.

Yah, i'm a junior in high school right now in honors physics and honors precal and planning to do AP next year. As far as school go, i think you really gotta concentrate on what part of the industry you want to work in. In the hunt to find a good auto engineering school i asked a lot of people about where to go. My uncle works with boeing now, but most of his coworkers came from Domestic OEM's (ford chevy etc). He told me that many were graduates of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor (where i'm trying to go). They also have a good coop programs with companies from OEM's to aftermarket like Saleen.

Community Colleges are good. I'm at Volunteer State Community College (TN)...my 2year degree is Office Technology Management but I figure after 2 year to start on another one, maybe. I thought about maybe taking couple classes to learn basics and some knowledge of cars, just a lil something extra for fun to learn more about. :)

Hey, whats wrong with cooking school?? lol Its good some guys are going to cooking school. But yet my granny and mom taught me when I was 5 years old how to cook things. In my family I make best brownies, cake, etc...

ACT is what I had to take to get into college with. Usually you take them in highschool but I never did. I took thign called work keys test instead, but you'll need it for college. I did.

I forgot what it stands for but its just to show where your weak and strong points are, like if you'll need remedial classes and such. I scored 19 on mine.

Yeah basically. I didnt have ACT when I started college so I ended up having to take their placement test which over rules the ACT. So what I made on it didnt count to the school b/c I took their placement test instead, but yes you have to have ACT to get into college. Its better to have it then to take a placement test which overrides the ACT.

Yeah, my first semester totally sucked. I didn't know anybody and it was driving me nuts. However, after a semester or so, I started to make friends. Now, I miss being there. I have more friends in MN than anywhere else.

Like any college town that is atleast 50% women, yeah there were quite a few hotties!!! :boink

And as for the weather....you get used to it. But I can pretty much tolerate any weather, so YMMV.

i didn't see no high performance engine building machinning classes..

i saw automotive classes, not high performance. Do ihave to click into those auto classes to get to the high performance part?

Well, I had my 200SX SE-R up there the whole time. And I even had summer tires on year 'round. You just got to drive careful. I wouldn't buy a new car just for the move. BTW...I'm from Atlanta too....

So yeah, you will be the only one saying "coke" instead of "pop". And everyone makes fun of you for your southern accent. But, on the good side, girls find southern accents an attractive quality :) Which is good, because thats probably my onle one :(

Oh, and no matter how "unsouthern" you think you sound, you still sound southern to a minnesotan.

But hey, if you get up there...I'm sure you'll hear my name passed around since you are from Atlanta, and I am too. I'm not there anymore, but AFAIK, I've been the only Atlantan to go there for that program. That, and the only die-hard Nissan freak.

But i dont' really remember the name, does anyone here know what school i'm talking about? I'll call my friend tommorrow for the name cause he knows.
