My Versa has about a 1 inch gap between the interior roof and the retractable part of the roof that slides inside the roof to open the glass. I have never seen this before in ANY car w/ a moonroof. Usually there is no gap at all. Is this normal? I would post pics but I would need to get my wife to show me how. The dealer says it is fine because the moonroof is operating properly. I understand that it may only be cosmetic but IS IT THE WAY IT"S SUPPOSE TO LOOK?

Thanks in advance for any insight!

No gap at all on mine. When I close everything it's nice and tight and eliminates a lot of the wind noise, too. When everything is closed all you should see is the interior headliner.

I would want to see pictures to make sure I understand what you're talking about. You could e-mail them to me if that's easier... I can post them up for you.

I'll have to figure out how to upload pics from our camera onto our computer...but basically if you look up at the moonroof from inside the car there is a gap between the roof and the sliding part of the roof. I have never seen this before. Maybe if anybody out there has a moonroof and knows how to transfer pics from the camera to the computer they could take a pic of their interior roof and post it so I could see for myself if it is like mine?

Not sure from the description, but it sounds like the headliner itself is cut wider than the moonroof, and that there's a gap in the headliner that lets you see the underside metal of the roof. If the roof itself doesn't meet the moonroof frame properly, you'll have water coming in.

I know that the moonroof is a factory option, but are they truly installed at the factory? If it's a dealer-install, the mechanic may have ****ed up and they weren't about to scrap the whole car....

Thanks for the replies but I think that I am doing a bad job of describing what it looks like. A better way to describe it might be to say that the headliner hangs about an inch lower than the moonroof, so that is the gap that I am talking about.

I believe you're talking about the gap between the glass and the inside sliding panel?

If you are, that's just the way it had to be designed. If you look closely, both the glass and the roof of the car are curved. The inside slding panel is flat. They can't fit snugly together since room had to be left to accomodate that curve.

That they made the inside panel flat was probably just a way to squeeze a few more pennies out of the car. Manufacturing and implementing a curved inside piece would cost just a little bit more than the simple flat design they have on the car.

Additionally, the designers put the tilting mechanism bars in the middle of the glass sides so room had to be left for those rails to fit between the glass and the inside sliding panel.

So, to answer your question, yes, there is about a 1" gap between the moonroof glass and the inside sliding panel.

If that gap only exists when you have your shade open... then it's the space where the shade fits and is perfectly normal.
