Yes, it is a common occurance. I have never seen it happen first hand and certainly never with engines but my best friend works at the local corporate center for Best Buy and he tells me that 9 times out of ten when they order bulk products(DVD,CD,TV... electronics) and it is lost, it is caused by theft at port. People who work at or are associated with the shipping companies know what is in a container. Sometimes they can make a killing by accidentally putting on a truck to a cash buyer. There is a sizable police unit in LA whose sole task is looking for these lost goods. In fact, there was a show about this exact issue on the Learning Channel a while back.
It does not surprise me that some one would steal a container full of import engines at all. Where do you think they got the idea for the whole criminal aspect of Fast and the Furious??
I am probably silly to assume that that is what actually happened to Daunts first shipment, but it is a real possibility. Either way, insurance is a good thing and he seems to have effectively covered himself:)
