Just checking in to see if anyone else is still driving their 1st Gen Rogue. More specifically, a 2008-2010 model year Rogue that was purchased New. I'm curious to see what major and minor repairs or issues you've had throughout your ownership. Any improvements you may have made to your vehicle. How your interior/exterior is holding up. Most importantly, do you still like/love your Rogue?

Personally, I still LOVE my '08 Rogue! Here is my experience...

I purchased my '08 Rogue SL AWD in Indigo Blue in November, 2007 and we're still cruising along at 173,000 Miles. At 700 miles, I switched to Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 5W-30 and have changed it every 5,000-6,000 Miles since. Knock on wood... No issues with oil consumption. The biggest major failure was the original CVT failing at 119,500 Mi. The replacement was covered under the class action lawsuit extended warranty (10YR/120k). I was very lucky in the timing on that!

The next major failure was the rear differential at appx. 155,000 mi (March, 2023) and I replaced it with Nissan Part: 38300-JD610 at a local shop for $1,700. The AC compressor has been replaced twice, but that is a fairly common issue on all vehicles. I had the HVAC blower motor replaced last year at 168,000 Mi. ($500).

Smaller repairs: I've personally replaced the radiator, which cracked due to age and the exterior door handles on the front doors twice, which is a pain in the #$$. Then you have the stupidly designed exterior door handle pull cable that can pop out inside the door. I just fixed that on the passenger side last week. It only took me 2 years of putting it off and having to open it from the inside. :rotfl

The interior is holding up nicely, with the exception of the driver's leather seat which is cracked and missing an 10" wide section on the outward facing side, exposing the cushion. One BIG pain point on this car has been the Moonroof/Sunroof drains... they CLOG! I've had water in my footwells and stain the headliner a few times which had gone unnoticed until an odor started getting worse and worse. I found out the carpet under the passenger floor mats was soaked and getting moldy! I was able to get that cleaned up and I Bio-Bombed my car to fix the odor. I've since learned how to clean them out with irrigation tubing and an air compressor to get the air all the way down to the drain outlet so as to not blow out the tubing. Again, I learned the hard way having to reconnect it above the headliner and behind the glove compartment what a royal PITA!

As for the Exterior, the Indigo Blue paint on the hood and roof is oxidized and the clear coat is deteriorating. There are other areas with clear coat starting to come off, but the doors, rear cargo door and quarter panels look good.

For improvements, back in 2015 I replaced the original Nissan (Bose) Radio/Head Unit with a Pioneer AVH-4100NEX CD/DVD, SXM, Bluetooth, Android Auto+Apple CarPlay head unit. I tapped into the factory roof antenna for the SiriusXM signal for a clean install. This required running a new wire from under the rear driver side cargo area, where the antenna and bluetooth modules live, then ran it down under the plastic interior moulding (interior sill plate area), up to the front dash, then over to the center head unit area. What a pain, but it was oh-so-clean and works perfectly! What a huge improvement this was over the factory head unit! The other improvement was to put in WeatherTech floor mats, which have held up very well.

Fast forward to now: I am getting ready to replace, for the first time, the Front Struts and Rear Shocks along with having a mechanic check all of the steering/control/wear parts and replace the serpentine belt. Once this new work is done, I'll take her for an alignment. I'm hoping to keep my Rogue going for at least 3-5+ more years, that is, if my wife will let me. Perhaps my Rogue will be treated to one more set of tires before she is retired. :gotme

Anyway, I don't see many posts from 1st Gen owners on here, since I know they are getting quite old by now and many have gone to the junk yard due to the CVT issues, age, or collisions. Look forward to hearing from any others out there, even if this post finds you years from now. :dblthumb:

If you've made it this far... You're Awesome! :mike Thanks for reading!

I just answered a query from a gent with a '12. There are actually quite a few in here.

Vis the sunroof, Nissans up to about '21 all have the same problem, diffuser nubs molded into the egress fittings. Their ostensible purpose is to prevent annoying "gurgling" in the drains, but in practice they just form a handy trap for crud and tree sap. Knock them out and you'll probably never see another clog. See this post:

Hopefully the CVT replacement taught you about the fluid, but if you haven't been changing it, you're just about to enter the danger zone which starts at about 60K after new/replacement. There are tons of posts about it in here, but suffice it to say that the CVT formula is very simple: When the fluid dies, the transmission dies with it. If they didn't install a cooler with the new one (chances are they did), then adding one is a good idea too. The '10A CVT's from '08~'10 without coolers overheat at the drop of a hat.

Thank you very much for the info about the drain nubs. I recall reading or seeing pictures of that being a fix a while back, but I have no idea how to access them. Is it from the wheel well? Do I replace the fasteners and pull back to reveal the drains?

With the original CVT, it was my understanding that it should have had the cooler since it is an AWD model. At least that is what I recall reading on here. I did have the original CVT serviced at my local Nissan dealer by approximately 60k mi. I do mostly highway driving, but going forward, I will be better about having the fluid serviced every 30-40k mi. I have an appointment today at a different Nissan dealer to have the CVT serviced. They want $240+tax. It was the lowest of the nearest 3. One dealer wanted $299+tax and was about 45 minutes away.

Is there anything I should be particular about with the CVT fluid change? Is there a filter/screen I should insist on having changed or should it just be an NS-2 drain and fill?

Thanks for the info and guidance!

Cvt fluid. Other front suspension stuff. Valve cover. Clockspring. Using Walmart syn oil. Car has cvt cooler but will still overheat and whine at high temps or rpms. I live with it.

Wow, that's great to get so many miles on the replacement CVT. Was your rear diff exhibiting issues to prompt the replacement? Had the fluid on the original rear diff been changed at least once during that time? Walmart and Costco Kirkland Synthetic Oil is very good from what I've seen on Bobistheoilguy.com. I did start using the Costco Kirkland on my last change since I ran out of M1 5W-30.

IIRC on the gen1's the front drain fitting on the driver's side is covered up, like on the gen5 Altimas and R52 Pathfinders. The best bet is to just break the nubs from inside. I made a special tool for it by coopting a stubby phillips screwdriver, chopped at an angle and sharpened. The shaft should be 1-1/2" long to the tip. You pop the hose loose, then twist and push the tool in the fitting until you feel the nub break.

This afternoon I successfully had my '08 Rogue's CVT fluid drained and filled. I guess there is no easily accessible filter on this CVT. I asked and the service advisor about it and she said it would be well over $1000 if I had them open it up to replace the filter. Does anyone know if that is true, or was she full of :bs: ?

Nah, she didn't know what she was talking about. On '10A's the paper filter is underneath the beehive, it's 4 screws and a pair of new o-rings. Dropping the pan to clean the screen is a different matter, but that's a screen and not a filter. Unless your trans is in bad shape there's very little chance of it ever clogging. The same is pretty much true of the paper element, Nissan doesn't recommend ever changing it. I've only ever seen them cause problems on trannies that are full of metal shavings, and that usually means it's on its last legs anyway.

On rear diff? - no I had not changed fluid and didn't notice until it started smoking. I change it now.

I maintain my daughter's 2011 SV AWD. Since we bought it at 126K almost four years ago (155K now), I have done rear brakes (calipers, pads, and rotors as the old stuff was nasty), blower motor and resistor (wasn't working when I bought it so I got both to avoid having to wait), drain and fill the CVT twice (almost due again, will do at next oil change), and plugs. I replaced the battery January of this year. Funny how cold weather brings out the weakness in a battery. It had a locked up AC compressor when I bought it - cheap, as the kid was told it needed a new motor. SMH...

My next job will be the clock spring next week as her cruise isn't working. After that will be front struts and rear shocks as there is some suspension noise up front that I can't narrow down to anything else like sway bar bushings, end links, LCAs, or ball joints. I also noticed at the last oil change that two of the CV boots were torn, so I'll replace those with split boots. Front brakes still seem good, so I'll let them ride until they need it.

If it feels like car is sliding when you break going forward or back it could be subframe bushings. There is a hack for that where you cut bushing and put in in space with bolt and washer. Keeps it from moving. I thought it was my struts but it wasn't.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind and look for that.
