Hey all, I recently picked up a 2000 i30t with approx 60K miles from a family member who didn't want the vehicle any longer, and I've noticed quite a few issues with the car. I'll itemize everything I've sensed wrong with the car.

1. When cold starting the car, there is a screeching sound that is hear for 1-3 seconds, and then subsides.2. When turning the vehicle off, there is a strange almost "camera shutter" sound that can be clearly heard sitting in the drivers seat.3. When accelerating (with the car in normal operational temp and everything) there is no power / the rpms can't seem to exceed 4,000 rpm. 3a. At this 4k point, there is very little power, the rpm stays put around 4k and the speedo doesn't add any mphs, until you let off the gas and allow it to shift gears so the revs drop below 4k and then you may again accelerate a 'bit'.4. While driving the vehicle in the city or freeway, at a speed of approx 40mph, when you want to give the car some gas, but not enough to cause a downshift, there is this metallic crunching, grinding noise. Almost the same noise if you were to put a manual transmission in say 5th gear at 15mph and tried to apply the gas pedal. 5. The car doesn't drive like its got 227 hp, more like 127 hehe.

Funny enough I've owned a 2000 i30 years back, and it was a great car. I bought mine in 2000 and sold it in 2004, and moved on and tried out different brands and whatnot. When this 2000 i30 was offered to me (the family no longer had the need for a second car, let alone insuring/registering, etc) for 1000 bucks. The car has less than 60,000 miles, so I figured I'd use it to balance out the mileage usage on my present lease. I was planning to drive the car for a while and then possibly sell it or pass it along to a sibling or other family member.

Does any of this sound familiar to anyone, and do any of these symptoms sound like they're going to be expensive / technical to fix?

Ah yes, and the bose head unit isn't reading any disc i insert burned or store bought, and the 6 disk in the trunk is only reading store bought disks.... any help with that..... I know the head units are notorious for busting, had so many issues with my old j30 as well, damn bose unit died like 3 times.

Thanks in advance.

First make sure the CEL is working then have the car scanned for trouble codes. Some problems, e.g. Knock Sensor, stores afault code but does not turn on the CEL.

For Item 1 - screeching sound. This may be due to loose/worn driver belt or the Idler Pulley is failing.

No clue as to what is causing the 'shutter' sound.

For Item 3&3a, it may be a dirty or failing MAF sensor and/or Knock Sensor.

For Item 4, first check the level and color of ATF (pinkish red when good). At 60K, the car is due for need transmission service. And with the kind of problem you are having, might as well do a pan drop (@ 21 one-time use bolts which can be recycled if you want to), clean pan and magnets, replace the transmission filter (mounting bolts are of differing length for the filter and one has a nut (reverse thread?) so take note of their location.) and use new gasket + crush washer for the drain plug. After the pan drop, refill with exact amount of ATF drained. Then have the transmission fluid flushed. You can emulate transmission flush by doing multiple drain and refill (2-3 times. Run engine for 100 secs then stop, and drain fluid.

Recommend fluid is Nissan Matic-D but you can use Dexron III or the newer Dexron VI. At minimum of 12 quarts is needed for multiple drain and refill.

Me thinks this car has not been very well looked after. At 60K, it's unusual for so many problems. My thoughts are:1 - belts2 - motor mounts3 - maf?3a, 4&5 - better drop that transmission pan and see what's going on.

i30way.....did you ever figure out that was going on with you car? I just got an I30 for my son and his car is doing some of the same things. The main one is lack of power and not shifting gears? If you are driving it and "punch" it it will also rev up to 4k but doesnt give you any more acceleration. I had the transmission flushed and this didnt seem to help. There is no check engine light. I dont want to put to much into it .(oops it is a 2000 with 147k miles) I have been told it could be anything from O2's (the car has 4 of them) to cat's( there are 3) to MAF all of these will start to cost more than I want to put into the car....unless i have to

Thanks for any help

not going above 3-4k is your Mass Air Flow sensor a.k.a. MAF

not wanting to shift....could be a grounding problem from the transmission

Thanks.....I will look into the MAF...not sure about the "grounding" issue but will look in to that as well....
