What possible damage occurred to my vehicle ('96 Ford Explorer, 5.0 liter, AWD) from having 10 quarts of oil (i use synthetic mobile one) in it?? I took it somewhere to have the oil changed and they failed to drain any out!!! I must mention that I had the oil change prior to a 10 hour trip to Fla and back again.... so it was driven @ 75 mph for approx 20 hours!!! I took it in (same garage that did the oil change) when I got back because it was behaving REALLY strange (shuddering when I accelerated from a stop). What possible damage was done???? Thanks for reading.

Overfilling of oil has 2 primary consequences: oil frothing and seals blowing. Blown seals are self-explanatory. Oil frothing will effectively decrease the amount of lubrication in the engine and possibly increase engine wear, becuase of air bubbles in the oil. Check the hot oil pressure with the oil at the proper level. I assume 5 quarts is normal fill, so it was 5 quarts over?

Wow... how's it driving now? That's quite an overfill. I'd have the shop that messed up pay for an oil pressure test at another shop, and get everything documented in case you need it later. Yet another reason I like to DIY, even though I'm probably loosing $$ with the opportunity cost...

How did you find an Infiniti forum for your Ford question?

Geez, teach these guys how to read a dipstick. Actually, everyone should do it. Even I am lazy given the Japanese quality and frequent changes.

Heath, I quess it's driving ok now. I picked it up from the shop yesterday afternoon..... now there is an engine "vibration" when the engine is at 1400-1500 RPM's that the mechanic showed me.... I'm really not sure if this vibration is new... I don't think so because I keep my truck in top-notch shape and I think I would have noticed it. If you place the truck in park and rev it up to 1400-1500 RPM the engine vibrates OR if you're driving at a speed while the engine is at 1400-1500 RPM you can feel the vibration. :(.

Please explain what you mean by "oil pressure test".

I found this forum by doing a google search for "auto mechanic forum". I have joined a total of 4 mechanic forums in order to get lots of different opinions... I am a girl and don't know much about such things.

Thank everyone for replying!
