2000 i30
trying to fix mom's car. she said it started stalling. I noticed it would idle and drive good but when pulling to a stop would sporadically stall. if i was parked i could rev the motor to around 3 and it would drop to 0 and stall.

i noticed the batter cables were corroded so I started there. Pulled the cables cleaned them and charged the battery. PROBLEM GOT WORSE. now it's hard to start and won't idle.
if i give it some gas when i start it - it will idle for a bit and then die.

i pulled the cable off the MAF sensor and started the car - (saw this recommended in another post) The car idled okay. I hooked it back up and the problem came back.
Am I looking at a new MAF? or could it be another problem?

It's either the MAF, the idle air control valve, or both. I ended up replacing the IACV on my daughter's 97 and it still had the stalling problem. Then I replaced the MAF, and it has not stalled since. With your idle issue, I'd say you're probably looking at both.

Try cleaning both of them first especially the idle air control valve
You undo the screws carefully and it is about 3 pieces to clean up
I cant remember the MAF but its trickier to clean
Use high quality electronic cleaner on both
I think there is information how to clean them on this website
I know for a fact the IACV will spec out ok electronically but can collect so much carbon it wont work
While you are working on them check them with a multimeter
