I just got a 01 sentra se 5spd, I'm looking to put in an intake and exhaust as soon as I can. I'm not too worried about what the car would sound like when I put them in I'm more concerned about the performance of the car.

My questions are should I get a CAI or a regular one? and would I be able to put in the intake in myself?

Keep in mind it's an everyday car.

thanks for any help.

I would get a cold air intake. They are very simple to install and you should be able to do so just by following directions and there are plenty of write ups all over the forums. As for exhaust I don't know what catbacks are available for sentra's but I would go for a 2.5" catback exhaust and 2.25"-2.5" headers.

cold air intake for sure. There are lots of cat-back exhausts out there so pick which one you like the most. A free-flowing header helps a lot, too.

Yep, go for a CAI, header, and cat-back exhaust. Three steps that work amazing together.

I was told by a bunch of people that a CAI isn't worth it I could use a regular one and it will be about the same thing.

Is that true?

depends on many things from driving conditions to what your looking for. short ram have a louder intake air sound while cai if done properly should yeild a better horsepower gain but either way your talking maybe 2-8 max hp diffrence. so you take a 200 cai compaired to a 40 buck ebay knock off and people look bang for buck

The CAI is going to make more power. It's debatable as to whether it's worth it, but, especially in the winter, the power difference is going to be noticeable.

SR's like to breath, so 2.5in exhaust won't hurt, but 2.25 will suffice. Good catbacks are available from BRM, Greddy, and Stromung, and custom setups are fairly easy/common.

There are a few header options. OBX and SS Autochrome are currently considered the best value since they're very good Hotshot knockoffs and won't rust.

You can install all of this yourself with hand tools.

I'm not too sure I could do the exhaust by myself.

I also heard CAI make your car take longer to start, that true?

You might not be able to do the exhaust by yourself...

But there is no way having a CAI makes your car take longer to start. Certainly not in mine.

The CAI does not make the car take longer to start. It will positively affect your gas mileage, assuming it doesn't make you want to get on throttle more.

Installing an exhaust is very easy. A jack and some sockets or even just an adjustable wrench will do it in 15 minutes. You unbolt the stock exhaust from the cat, take it off the hangers (at worst you'll need a hammer or some sort of hammering object to get it off the hangers), put the rubber part of the hangers on the new exhaust, bolt it and hang it, and voila. Usually catbacks come in two pieces to make this even easier. The pieces bolt together.

A header isn't much harder, but the nuts on the manifold studs can be a b**** to get to.

Well I found a friend who could help me install all those.

But now the question is where do I get them from? and what's a good brand?

For what? For CAI, I strongly recommend AEM. For headers, there's a bunch of brands. I like DC Sports, but they're ceramic-coated and not stainless steel. OBX and SS Autochrome are pretty popular right now.

AEM and Injen are the most common/proven CAI brands. Even an Ebay Special with a good filter substituted in (you could get a K&N cone from Autozone) would be fine.

What about the exhaust?

so those ones on ebay for 50 bucks are all crap I'm assuming.

You have to be weary with ebay. You never know what you're buying. Personally I'd go with the BRM exhaust, it sounds great on nametaken's car. Also you could go the custom route. Could always take it to a exhaust shop and see what they could do. I have 2.25" catback mandrel bent with a OBX dual tipped muffler for $137 and it sounds pretty good imo.

I can't help but recommend the BRM. Check out the exhaust thread linked in the Table of Contents to hear mine.
