Hey peeps.I need to replace the rear passenger side injector. The screw to the right is easy to get to but the left side will take some grinding. The screw is blocked by a squared off protrusion on the upper plenum. Is that just a casting lift or is it pretty close to the tube ?Ive always wondered just how thick the walls are on our upper plenum tubes ..Any insight ?

That's the one that prompted me to pull my plenum to replace all six of 'em and the EGR valve.

The socket head cap screws that I replaced the Philips head screws with look like they would ALMOST be accessible using a ball-tipped allen driver, but that will be another 172K miles from now.

I was tempted to grind the interfering plenum points out of the car, but decided against it. It's really heavy and seems to have a lot of extra meat to it. Watch for knuckle slicing sharp edges.

Thanks .. I was just hoping its a solid triangular piece and not too close to the tube.Wont have to take off much.Soaked it all in Liquid wrench last night.Wish me luck !!I have no desire or time to pull the upper plenum. And the price of just one injector is gonna put me in a tight budget kinda place .

The inside contours of the plenum are smoothly shaped and rounded, with no triangular indentations.

I have five "working when pulled" souvenir used injectors...that I wouldn't recommend to anyone. Maybe the new ones are improved and don't forget the new o-rings.

I suppose I can/should get a job now that my J30 is together again and since my EDD benefits end about 15 weeks from now.

Good luck.

Ive already replaced one ,, luckily no grinding needed on that one :O)

Gotta whole set of upper and lower O rings from Joe back then ..

If you look at the overkill thread that you posted pics in you will see the triangle piece I'm speaking of.There's one on either side of the plenum where it meets the center runner.

On the road again ...

FYI the Flex extender rig for the dremmel is perfect for precision grinding on the plenum. Its like being a Dentist . lolAlso if you do replace the cap screws for the injector with hex screws a Ball nose allen wrench is mandatory.New injector and a good seafoam treatment and I'm golden again. After this tank is gone I'm gonna give her some BG44K as well. Seeing the top of the piston through the spark plug hole convinced me it is carbon removal time !!!

VERY impressive, and if you'd been a dentist or a doctor you wouldn't need to do this sort of stuff yourself (although I think my dentist restores Packards).
