I went to start the 93 j30 yesterday, to no avail. Battery was totally dead. I replaced the battery. The car started & ran fine. The battery light on the I.P panel then came on along with the lamp out, & the brake light ( low fluid light?) as well. Is there a quick check for volts with the car running to check the alternator output? I read close to 12 volts on battery with the engine off. I read almost identical numbers with the engine running. Shouldn't the battery read over 13 volts with engine running? If I have to buy a new alternator, what kind is recommended for these cars? Does anybody have a procedure for removal/installation? Thanks for your help!

Sure sounds like the alternator,Many are hard core about using only a OEM alternator but I had to go with the Autozone replacement. If cash flow isn't an option, get a OEM.

The majority of members throughout the years I've moderated this forum have not had good luck with aftermarket alternators. If you want to save yourself many headaches, I would go with an OEM Nissan either new or rebuilt unit.

I, too, was like Yoda and didn't want to or have the $$$ to buy OEM. I've got an alternator on my J that I bought at Advance Auto. It was originally on my 93 J and then when my 94 J's alternator took a dump, it went on there. It's been going strong for over 2 years.
