Ok so here's the scoop. Before I make my turbo monster I found it wise to start small. I own 3 z31's. 1 is a pretty red 89 (my dd). A great 88 with digital guages and turbo wheels and spoiler, and an 87 p.o.s. that had the hatch busted in and rained in for three years (both cars ran and started on first crank on 3 year old gas, 87 needs clutch 88 has tapping lifter even though 60k less miles). The 88 is the one I have big power plans for down the road. But seeing as how I'm a young driver and wanna start racing legally I figured I'd kill 2 birds with one stone. Get used to power and handling slowly and compete in autox and maybe road course racing. Sooo the 87 I Removed the entire interior and some bits under the hood. I wanna keep this car naturally aspirated to race in a lower class. Power plans are nothing more than all accesory delete, intake, headers, and exhaust. However I want this thing as light weight as possible. nothing in the car that doesn't make it go stop or turn.I kept and labeled all of the underdash wiring harness and guages so I can at least reuse those til I get different ones. I'll use this analog gauge cluster to replace the 88's problematic digital ones when it gos. as of now the car has no hatch and I'm contemplating a truck idea. seen it done on silvias used for drift. Cut out the triangles create a sheet metal bed (correctly I'm not too retarded) and create a sheet metal and plexiglass rear cab deal. I understand the loss in ridgidity and a roll cage is definately going to happen. Is the truck idea worth the weight loss?? or should I just plexi the triangles and still do the truck with them there? i can still salvage and plexi the hatch.,. opinions are important here whatever they may be. door glass I want replaced with removable plexi and a impact support on the drivers door also with a window net. ps I still want the car able to pass inspection in va., which isn't rough just lights signals and brakes... I'm sorry for rambling and asking too many questions. Just contribute if you can any weight cutting ideas as well as build regulations for a car. Just shoot some info or ask a question I'd really appreciate it. thanks

Body modifications like that will take you right out of the stock classes in which the Z31 might be somewhat competitive. I'm not even sure if you're allowed to do a full interior removal to stay in the stock class.

i was very afraid of that. especially since even the dash is now aluminum.. oh well.. think the hp and tq bump will be significant enough to remain competitive or should I go ahead and consider the ole t3

if you intend to actually particiate in sanctioned motorsports, you need to attend the type of events you intend to partake in, and buy the rule book! for anytcross, that dash alone puts the car in a prepared or modified catagory

I run my Z31 as an EM car, and regionally it's competetive, with good tires it might be competetive as a divisional car, but not even close on a national scale

ultimately you have to decide if you want to build the car the way you want it and run it in whatever class it fits in or to try building it to be competetive in a specific class, being a young driver you might just want to build it how you want and lear the ropes, at some point you'll likely find it's frustratingly outclassed in whatever class and change the car, change cars or build to the limit of the class

I'm awa of the dificulty ahead with the z31 but my love for the car won't change. I'll do what I can. There are a few z31's at local junkyards I can pick up whatever parts I may need to suit it's class
