This is from the discussion about cloth filters (aftermarket) vs. paper filters (stock).
I think that auto manufactures want to save money any way they can, and using cheaper paper filters is one way. A cloth filter will not flow as well as a paper of the same size due to the added oil resistance in the cloth. However, most-if not all aftermarket filters have a larger surface area compared to their stock replacements. Even if the filter is the same size, the cloth will have more folds-thus increasing the surface area.
Get an aftermarket intake, you'll be happy with the results not only in HP, but also in the sound.
