I have not started my '92 Q45 in over three months. I am currently working to get her back running. It had all the symptons of a long needed MAF cleaning. So I did that, cleaned the TB, what I could of the plenum, EGR, AAC, and various connecting hoses.

None of those parts had EVER been cleaned. I can't wait to start her up. But, I know that leaving a car sitting for an extended period of time and then just firing it up is not good for it.

What protocol should I follow to have a safe start?

The fuel in the tank is old and lacking of quantity to be sure.Would draining and cleaning the tank be wise? or necessary?

What about the oil that has been collecting at the bottom?Should I pour some in while trying to start?

What other things should I be concerned with?

It has been sooooo long since I have been able to drive her and the last thing I want to do is inflict damage on the account of ignorance. er something?

any and all help welcome. thnx, Ben

3 month old gas might not be too bad. Change the oil. Run some BG44k in the next tank. Pull the injector and fuel pump fuses, and crank the engine for a few seconds several times to prime the oil pump before replacing the fuses and starting her up.

Mine sat in the garage for 3 months when my mom quit driving. It fired right up and ran perfectly.

Also adding some fresh gas will freshen the gas up. but if its been sitting in a colder climate trhe gas would still be ok.

An oil change wont hurt eitehr as it will "wet" some of your upper engine parts a bit, pre fill the oil filter well.

Draining and cleaning tank wont be needed.

Otherwise do what Deadalus said.

Thanks guys. She is going to be sitting out another week though. I am going to attack the valve covers.

The engine sludge is god awful and must be cleaned manually. I am suffering from the domino effect. I start one thing and it just leads to another.

I am sure you will be hearing from me soon, as I have never preformed an operation of this magnitude.

And so the journey begineth.......

...........And so the journey endeth.

A quick search on valve covers has weakened my resolve. I will instead use a engine flush treatment over a period of about 4 weeks or so. By then my courage should be intact and ready to attack the VC. No not the viet-cong, the valve covers.

then again who knows. is this a good avenue of approach?---->Using the engine treatment then doing the VC or just say the hell with it and come out with a full frontal assault on the valve covers?

if u r gonna do vvle covers migjht as well do 'em fdirst also:

DANGER MR Smith, if you are heavily sludged a harsh flush may destroy your engine via knocking stuff loose , blocking galler's and starving engien of oil.

I would do a manual removal and then a envirolution or motorvac engien flush.

THanks Fred,

I am heeding your advice as we speak. Have started on pass side valve cover. Not too many road bumps so far, just a couple hard to reach bolts and stubborn connectors.

BTW, best web site on the web!

Good luck keep us posted!

Sorry about the huge number of typos in my last post.

If you find a lot of sludge, I would still consider the envirolution engine flush to get the to lower gallery's
