I will be doing this mod on my M35x in the next few weeks. When doing the plenum spacer mod I knowtice a bit more oil in the plenum than I care for. So in my opinion I think v6 guy can also benefit from this mod. Also have a new PCV valve for when I do this mod.

Actually, that's a good point. I did notice a little bit when I was installing my spacer. I'll probably do this as well.

You too. I think this is a problem with VQ engine as well. I seen a few Maxima, Altima, and 350z with oil in the air filter box.

How does this thing get installed? You extend the PCV hose...from manifold into oil separator into PCV?

here's a quick paint drawing i did to help with how to install this, atleast for the M45. Green line is where the oem hose was, red and yellow is new hoses purchased separately. Also where the catch can is, there was a wire harness there so once you remove it all you need is a bolt with a nut to hold it in place.

Mex, I like that installation better but is it also pulling air from the drivers side bank?

To be honest I'm not sure what you mean. I just put it in to keep the oil out. Maybe someone with some knowledge can chime in for you.

Guys,
Thank you for all the great information you posted. I want to install a dual oil separator system. I already install one by the PCV. the other one is for the Throttle body air intake area. If anybody have an idea as to where to place it I would really appreciate it. I ran out of ideas. I will post a pic of my oil/air separator.

sorry I am new here and dont know how to post pics. ???

thank you

Im going to try this on my VQ35de in my 05 Z roadster. I had an oil consumption issue (1qt. every 1k miles) so I bypassed the PCV system and installed a catch can that vented to the atmosphere. I drove 6500 miles and didn't burn one drop. When I drained my catch can it was full of moisture and a very small amount of oil. I thought I was good until I went to change my oil. Upon remove the oil fill cap I saw emulsified oil in the top of the fill cap. So Im back to the drawing board to utilize the PCV system to get rid of the moisture in conjunction without oil getting into the intake manifold. I will try this and see how it goes, hopefully this will be the fix I need. I just bought my ZR and I wasn't aware of the oil consumption issue and way past any warranty so I gotta figure this out on my own dime. If anyone has some good input please PM me. Thanks

I would like to revise my statement. There are obviously two PCV valves, one from each valve cover. If you add a separator to the line between the PCV valves and the intake manifold, only one of the two crankcase ventilation locations is being separated.

According to the 2003 M45 FSM section EC-697 there is a diagram that describes the PCV system. The two PCV valves are connected, so adding the oil separator to the intake location after the throttle body is good for normal load conditions. And it works because I collect oil there on mine. However, under high load conditions, such as acceleration, the fresh air line is reversed and blow-by is forced into the intake before the throttle body. This is why carbon build-up can be seen on the butterfly valve of the TB and why some see oil in the air filter box. So you could add a second oil separator to that location, but I am not sure if the separator would work with bi-directional air flows.

Well, you don't need a catch can.
But if you end up installing it, using only 1 would be much easier to install.
Installing 2 would be cool to visually compare what your left and right banks are doing individually.
