Welcome to NICOclub!
The Maxima does "require" premium fuel for the best performance, you can run mid-grade but your fuel mileage will decrease. I'm not sure if it applies to the current Maximas, but my car lost as much as 3-4mpg by running mid-grade vs premium, which is a considerable difference. The Maxima is also rated for 19mpg city and 26mpg highway, but it may be averaging 21mpg combined.
Personally I prefer the current Altima 3.5 over the current Maxima, just because I feel like the Maxima is a bit overpriced now. You should check out an Altima 3.5SR if you haven't already, it starts right at $25,000 when the Maxima starts at nearly $32,000 and I don't see $7,000 between it and the Altima myself. You might also consider looking at the Infiniti G sedan, if you don't feel like the Altima 3.5SR is as nice as the Maxima, because it starts at nearly the same price and you get a lot more for your money with it. Plus the Infiniti G doesn't have the CVT, which is one thing that I despise about the Maxima and Altima both.
I love my car and it's one of the best cars i've owned, which is probably why this is my second one now. After 2003 I pretty much lost all interest in them though. They're still nice cars even now, but I wouldn't buy one personally when the Infiniti G sedan also starts at the same price and is a MUCH nicer car IMHO.
