the fan switch has to be on for it to work otherwise it wont light up.. but if your fan switch is on and its not lighting it may be your switch is bad.. to test your a/c by alternative methods set your controls as follows.. fan switch on 1 , mode dial on defrost, temp dial on full cold, with the car running after about 10 mins check the air tamp coming out of the windsheild vents. Does it feel like the a/c is running is it ice cold? also you can set the controls like that and go under the hood and look at the A/C compressor drivers side of engine near the top is the center of it spinning? this would indicate all other functions of your A/C is working so it may be a bad switch.
If you get no cold air and the compressor is not spinning it is likely the system is low or out of freon due to a leak. Or a pressure switch in the system has gone out.
