Hey guys,

I have a 98 Pathfinder SE 3.2L with about 81000 miles and the engine is idling high when I start the car. It is idling at around 1500 rpms before the car warms up and drops down to around 800 when it is fully warmed up.

It used to idle at around 900 to 1000 before dropping to the 800 range when warmed up.

I asked this question previously and as suggested, I cleaned out the throttle body with carb cleaner but it still does the same thing.

Its strange that the engine would idle high when I am having no other problems. This is really getting on my nerves.

Does anyone know what the problem may be.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,Ben

its a 3.3L I cant recall if it has this off the top of my head but perhaps the thermal cold start valve[wax kit] is having a problem over extending.

What do I need to do to correct this problem?Do I need to bring this into the shop?

BTW, you're right, it is a 3.3L and not a 3.2L

you may be able to do this your self. look at the throttle cable drum on the throttle body is there a cam on the opposite side of the throttle body that has a green heavy spring on it? that would be the type of fast idle control I am refferring to. I wont see another pathfinder till monday, I cant picture weather its that type or not at the moment.

I don't see the spring that you are describing.

hmm didnt have a r50 3.3 in the shop today, I will try to get a look at its fast idle control in the service manual tomorrow.

I will tell you though 1500 rpm does not seem all that bad for fast idle that is usually the high end of a cold start idle. Its usually 1200 to 1500 rpm.

I wouldn't think of it as having a high idle other than the fact that I have owned this car since new and it has alway idled at around the 1000 rpm area at cold start and then it would quickly drop down to around 800 rpms. I also noticed that it takes quite a while longer before the car warms up and the idle drops to around 800 to 900 rpms. The rpms don't drop to 800 - 900 rpms until the temp gauge is around the middle.

I appreciate your inputs and efforts.

ok I have the check out procedure for the cold idle cam. It is as I described eralier on except its on the same side as the cables are attached. I will scan and upload them tonight pretty simple little test if you have a way to moniter your coolant temp sensor out put.

had issues with my scanner last night but got it this morning. Here is the inspection adjustment process of the fast idle control.Below low it list the preinspection before making any typical adjustments of base idle, timing and mixture. That would be the next step if the mechanical function of the fast idle cam is ok.
