Does anyone have experience with timing chains on a 98 nissan frontier? I had the lower guide break causing the chain to come out of time and bend the intake valves. After repairing and putting it all back together, using the original chains, I notice some slack in the upper chain - I'm not sure if this was always there. The following picture doesn't have the top tensioner on, but even with the tensioner installed the slack is still there. Rotating the shaft allows the slack to rotate around the upper gears. Is this normal for a 98 Frontier? Thanks for your help.

That seems excessive. Since you've gone through the trouble you have, I'd suggest a new chain too.

Thanks Desert Rat. Do you think the chain is just stretched out after 10 yrs of use?

Thanks

The tensioner is missing on that upper chain.

He said that already.

Yes, chains can stretch over time.

Can you reinstall the tensioner and measure how much movement you have?

Thanks,

I'll do some more measurements this weekend. It's been a fun project. I'll keep you updated on my findings.
