What is the procedure to replace a torn boot on the steering rack of a 1991 M30? Do you have to remove the entire tie rod? Do I need any special tools? Is there any way to mark the tie rod before disassembly so it can be screwed back together without realigning the car?

Even a single turn error in reassembly will result in a noticeable TOE ERROR.

We always require our rack/rack boot customers to secure an immediate realignment.

Alignments every 6 months are just part of normal maintenance process.

Back to top. Does anybody have any experience replacing the steering rack boot on an M30? What is the procedure to replace a torn boot on the steering rack of a 1991 M30? Does the entire tie rod have to be replaced? Any special tools required?

No M30-specific experience here, but I suspect it's a lot like the Q and Maximas we have owned. The outer tie-rod is just screwed out of the tie rod end.

Cut the metal retaining band on the big side, then remove and replace. Since you'll be paying for an alignment, you might as well replace both boots at the same time.

Good luck!
